I’m probably using the term ‘spinoff’ a little more loosely than it’s meant.
Here are my rules for this thread:
Spinoff is meant as any new tv show using a character from an existing tv show. That’s it.
For example; using the rules above MAS*H had two spinoffs. Trapper John MD, and AfterMASH. AfterMASH actually used the same actors in the same roles; but Trapper John MD was a whole new cast.
I thought of this today while working out because I’m one of the (few?) fans of the Two and a Half Men. I thought I’d like see a new sitcom about Charlie Harper when he was college age or shortly thereafter. One of the funny subplots in 2 1/2 Men was how Charlie always fell ass backwards into money and women. I could see that being comical, especially with him breaking into the music business.
Another one that was just announced that I’m tickled about is Better Call Saul, a prequel to Breaking Bad. Saul is such an awesome character I can see it doing well. Furthermore I think if they had the right writers you could make a good tv show with Badger and Skinny Pete.
I wonder if instead of introducing various Maverick relatives once James Garner left, if they could have spun off some recurring characters such as Diamond Jim Buckley (Efrem Zimbalist Jr) or Samantha Crawford (Diane Brewster).
I’d like to see a Firefly spinoff, following the adventures of Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Simon, River, Inara, and Jayne as they rattle around the 'Verse in an old beat up space ship.
I’d like to see the whacky adventures of “Garth: Spooky Hunter”.
It’d be like Supernatural but more of a comedy. Some whackiness but not over the top. Garth could hook up with some other Hunters who are third or fourth tier and with him being second tier is the leader of the group. Kind of like a more grown-up Scooby-Doo. I think the actor, DJ Qualls, could really pull it it off.
Ginger Grant: Porn Star. Picks up after the world-famous rescue and resulting 15 minutes of fame, then the crash into obscurity and a chance meeting with John Holmes.
The Enterprise crew always seems to be on duty or off duty together. Obviously there must be a night crew that runs the ship when the main crew is off duty. This wacky band of misfits and screwups have just as many adventures as the regular crew, with the added complication that they have to have everything cleared up by the time Picard wakes up, so they can report another uneventful night shift.
The Case of the Colonist’s Corpse by Tony Isabella and Robert Ingersoll, was the first (and so far, only) Samuel T. Cogley mystery. Cogley, you may recall, was Capt. James T. Kirk’s attorney in the Star Trek (TOS) episode, Court Martial. The novel was essentially a Perry Mason story set in the Star Trek universe, and I think that would make for a good television series.
I know I’m in the minority, but I’d still like to see an X-Files spinoff with Doggett and Reyes overseeing a pair of young agents and semi-frequent appearances by Mulder and Scully.
A whole series about the Canadian characters of South Park that mostly takes place in Canada. Ike moves back to Canada and gets involved in a lot of weird adventures with Scott the Dick, the Gints, Terrence and Phillip, Kate and Katherine, the Queen, Steve the Newfie, Ugly Bob, and the resurrected Saddam Hussein. He’s not your buddy, guy.
This is awesome. Wouldn’t even have to be the Next Generation, you could let the uniforms say what era.
Use different captains sometimes, but use the famous ones through tech magic. Each episode opens the same- “Have a quiet night, wake me if you need me” “Sleep well, Captain”.
(Edit- some of the night shifts could take place in Engineering, or even sickbay…)
They did the concept with Homicide: Life on the Streets with Homicide: Second Shift, which showed the detectives on the night shift. You haven’t heard of it because it was web only (in 1997), though there were crossovers with the main TV show. At one point a couple of the detectives from second shift showed up on the TV show and asked one of the stars to discuss something they were working on.
When they spun off the incredibly crappy Joey from Friends, I thought the strongest spinoff they could have done from that show would have been one showing Chandler and Monica in their new home taking care of their kids. They were in a neighborhood where they could have interacted with lots of people. And Chandler and Monica were by far the most stable two people out of all the characters by the final episode of Friends.
I’m still waiting for the Wire sitcom spinoff, Omar’s Comin’! When Omar has to move in with his gran, he’s forced to keep his life of vigilante profiteering a secret. Hijinx and hilarity ensue… you’ll be left wondering: will she ever figure out he doesn’t work at the airport?
