This thread started discussing the pros and cons of embedding pics and videos into threads. I figured this forum would be a slightly more appropriate venue to discuss the pros and cons of it.
Should we have embedded images? Videos? Signatures? What does everyone think?
I for one don’t really want to see a post your fav. porn thread on the Dope because that’s what eventually it all comes down to. If I wanted that, I can always visited the Mellow or Giraffe.
The only thing I would be happy to see, image-wise, is (non-animated) avatars. And there’s been a lot of people who have expressed intense objection to even those, so I think that’s the end of that kind of talk.
In GQ, it would often be useful to embed images or diagrams. Yeah you can host them elsewhere, but having to sign up somewhere if you don’t already have an image hosting account is kind of a pain. But I still vote no.
I use wikimedia commons. Yes, I know it’s not meant for that but they haven’t complained yet, and I only did it a few times and the pictures are still there.
Even if they did allow inline images, they’d still have to be hosted somewhere. It would only make things easier for the folks viewing the image, not for the one putting it up. And at that, a lot of image hosts don’t like being used that way, either, so all the people in the thread would see would be a “don’t steal bandwidth from us” placeholder image.
I use a nifty little firefox plugin (text-to-image) that automatically replaces a link to an image with the image itself. The only downside is that this only works with directly linked images, so if someone just links to the picture embedded in something like flickr’s flash frame, I still have to follow the link, but it does make the doper picture threads etc. at least a little more readable.
I’ve asked this before, but how about an optional picture embedding feature? Done in some way so as to allow you to choose, in your User CP, whether or not you want to view pictures directly, or only as links… I’m sure there ought to be some vBulletin add on allowing the implementation of something like this, and anybody fearing the vulgarisation brought on by pictures and the like can keep things just like they are now.
I happen to disagree with the whole “Allowing images will turn this board into just-another-imagespam-message-board” mindset. It is a mindset that discredits the mentality of the board’s members. In other words it implies that being able to include images will turn a board of intelligent sensible thoughtful people into a bunch of blithering idiots overnight.
I can understand other reasons for not allowing them, but this one just irritates me. Can’t we be the first internet message board that acquires a reputation for going about the image-posting thing in an intelligent way?
