xash, are you kidding me?

So saying "Your mama wears combat boots" is being a jerk, but, for example, when Der Trihs wished death on every American serviceman that wasn't being a jerk? Holy fucking shit. You guys have officially "twankled the crescendo moon," if you know what I mean.

It wasn't what you said, per se. It was a function of the conversation between you and Irishman. Responding in the manner you did to Irishman was unnecessary, and made it personal, which is not permitted in ATMB.

So unnecessary personal remarks are not permitted? Is that written down somewhere? if I can find, say, ten examples of unnecessary personal remarks in ATMB going unwarned will you admit that you just pulled that explanation out of your ass?

Don't you know by now that the emperors really don't like their lack of clothing pointed out? Or are you trying to be the next mswas?

What I did is not what he did by several orders of magnitude. As to the emperor thingy, you seem to be right.

Oh, and Lute, your marigolds are kinda stinky. If you know what I mean.

No doubt, but continuing to point out their lack of clothing could yield the same result.

If it does it does. I'm not going to make big deal out of not caring like he did, but if this crazily inconsistent moderation keeps a goin' on I'll probably not mind leaving too much.

And your shoelaces look like they were tied by an Armenian.

"But Mom, Billy got away with it" stops working when you're, like, 5. Grow up.

Why does this bring back memories of carpooling the kids to the YMCA, with the one neighbor kid constantly going, "I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you...."?

Because you desperately wished you could smack that kid across the mouth and now you figuratively have the power to?

Well for starters, your unnecessary and personal remarks are noted. Secondly, when the topic at hand is what kind of behavior is allowed by rule, whether Billy got away with it is most certainly pertinent.

If we are going to employ the "what a five year old would be insulted by" rule, then none of this would have happened. Or did the combat boots comment twist your shorts as well? If so, I want to go on record as saying that none of your mamas actually wear combat boots. Accept for the ones who are astronauts. Which your mama isn't.

Because, like the carpool driver, the moderators refuse to actually lay down and enforce reasonable rules and instead act in an unpredictable and uneven manner?

We have, indeed, asked that thread titles be safe for work outside of the Pit. Accordingly, I've edited this one, changing it from "xash, are you fucking kidding me?" to "xash, are you kidding me?"

You previously identified that you thought that comment was just as insulting as the one being discussed in that thread, which also got a warning. You then deliberately used it. This means the sole purpose of your response was to be insulting. I.e. you were acting like a jerk. And, for once, someone had the balls to actually call someone on it.

Those two options are not exclusive. And when has "it was just a joke" been a valid defense here?

Anyways, I expect that if it was a joke, the OP would have said so by now.

Could you point out to me where this request was made? I can't seem to find it in any of the relevant threads.

SDMB Registration Agreement AS OF 12/29/2008?
Nope.

FAQ - Rules for Posting at the Straight Dope Message Boards?
Nope.

FAQ - Guidelines and Etiquette on the SDMB?
Nope.

Nor is there any mention of this in any of the forum rules threads for each individual forum. Most forums have rules about descriptive thread titles, but i couldn't find a single place mandating, or even requesting, that thread titles outside The Pit be safe for work.

Actually, I said it was no more insulting than the previous remark, about which I said I had no idea what the intent was. I had indicated disbelief that it warranted a warning.

And anyone who takes "your mama wears combat boots" seriously as an insult needs to lighten up. Although I wasn't warned for being insulting. I was warned for being unnecessary and personal. Try getting a range finder on that restriction.

If I'd wished for the American troops to have successfully killed off every member of the "insurgency", would that have been "being a jerk"? And if not, then why is the opposite "being a jerk"?

And to clarify, I haven't "wished death on every American serviceman"; I've wished for the deaths of those in Iraq. You know; the ones involved in that whole aggressive war, conquest, occupation, torture thing. Since when is wishing for the destruction of conquering armies even unusual, much less "being a jerk"? Are all the millions of Iraqis who'd like to see the deaths of those who have devastated their nation and killed their friends and familes "jerks"?

Everything is relative. You're not on the ICMB (Insurgency Central Message Board) you're on the SDMB which is not primarily read and posted by insurgents.

If you did post that ("kill insurgents") to the ICMB then you would have been a jerk on that board.

I don't know. What's the opposite of picnic table?

Some of whom are members of the SDMB, or were at the time, which makes it expressly forbidden, and very jerkish, IMO. I guess the rules are different for some folks.

Of course, it all pales beside "unnecessary and personal." That's some real serious shit right there.

If you are trying to pretend the two cases aren't equivalent, you're wrong.

Nonsense. The rule only applies when such threats are personal; not when they are aimed at a group that some poster that you aren't even talking to (or aware of) happens to belong to.

And I've had wishes for my death, and more direct ones leveled at me here; people wishing for me to pick fights with some right wing thug and getting beaten to death for example. So whining about how I'm "wishing for the deaths" of posters because they happen to be the bad guys in a war that I want them to lose comes across as just that; whining.
