Marley23, you're making bad decisions.

You told me to take it to ATMB, so here we are.

In this thread:

You’ve made an unfair decision. ITR Champion injected what I consider to be threadshitting. I reported same. Silenus made an obvious joke…and even said he was joking in his post. You then come in to the thread, quote Silenus, and make an official “Mod Note” out of it, while doing nothing to ITR Champion.

You claim you did not come down on anybody. I disagree. When you quote a poster and do a mod note, it is reasonable to assume some form of officially sanctioned disapproval is intended.

What you’ve done is not fair, shows poor judgment, and is poor modding.

While I’m at it, you also messed up in this thread:

Gfactor moved the thread from the pit to MPSIMS. Obviously, that means he thought the thread was acceptable. You came in behind him and locked the thread. This is also poor modding. Once one of you acts, the rest of you need to stay out of it, otherwise there is a lack of consistency, and posters are left to the whims of whichever mod happens to wander through a thread. As a mod myself elsewhere, I consider such behavior counterproductive.

The moderator’s actions aside, you’re just putting a lot of effort into defending a stupid comment. If this was in the Pit and it was the old Pit, I’d be throwing disparaging comments at you.

Sadly, that fun is all gone.

It’s too late to edit the OP now, but what you should have done, Marley23, is make a mod note without quoting anybody. Then it has the effect you claim you intended.

If the pit hadn’t been neutered, I’d have lit **Marley23 **up like a pinball machine. If Ed wants to raise the tone of the board, the mods need to raise their standards, too. I’ve been a mod elsewhere for most of a decade. I have opinions on what good moderation is, and I’ll be sharing them as I see fit.

This is appropriate. This is, in fact, standard. It has always been common to use an example to just tell posters to chill. Sometimes I used a quote; sometimes I just started my post with an “Everbody needs…” Same difference. Notes are not recorded, and are forgotten pretty much as soon as the thread is.

Second example, also appropriate. GFactor should not be expected to scour MPSIMS for threads on the same subject before he moves it, or, should you expect him to, he should have closed it himself. He appropriately moved it to MPSIMS; a mod there saw that it was effectively a duplicate and closed it. No hoo-hoo.

In my humble opinion.

Yeah, and I’d gladly be in there lighting into you, as I have opinions on what common sense entails and your complaints fairly strongly exceed them.

This has nothing to do with Ed’s desire to avoid what he seems as abuse and foul language. Conflating the two won’t advance your argument (though calling your minor complaints an argument is a gift) at all.

Cheers.

My point is if anybody is going to get singled out, it should be the first to step out of line. In this case, that would have been ITR Champion, not Silenus.

You’ve incorrectly interpreted this as a punishment, which it isn’t. The fact that he was joking (as I already explained) is not relevant: someone would have responded seriously to object to being caricatured as a pussy. ITR Champion’s question could’ve also pushed the thread off topic (although the OP said he was fine with it),
So I attempted to keep the thread on track.

You’re wrong, but your objection is noted.

Again, not so. My goal is keeping the thread on topic, not approving or disapproving of anybody’s posts.

We don’t rule on “acceptability.” Gfactor’s decision was that the Pit was not the appropriate place for the thread. My decision was that we already had a thread on other boards in MPSIMS.

Disagree. We already had a thread discussing alternate boards in MPSIMS. I don’t know if Gfactor was aware of this, but I was, and it made that thread unnecessary.

Duly noted.

While I appreciate your input and this apparent dig at my honesty, I believe all of your objections are groundless.

I believe I clarified my intentions to Silenus. If he felt singled out by my comments I’d be glad to apologize. The goal is keeping the thread on track: it remained on track hours after ITR Champion’s post and the OP said he did not mind handling that kind of question. After a post that called other people pussies, even as an obvious joke, I felt it was likely to go off track.

I see a situation differently than you do. You may not have intended to appear to be coming down with the jackboots, but it appears to me that is what you did. I say again, a better way to handle the situation would have been to make your mod note without quoting anyone.

Nice to see the new rules working so well.

Actually, neither of the quotes appear to have anything to do with the new rules. The only effect of the new rules is that we are in ATMB, and not the Pit. Unless that’s what you meant.

Under the new rules, I’m not allowed to be as colorful as I might otherwise have been. So, in a sense, this is a mod pitting under the new rules as I understand them.

In fairness, the scoring needs to be adjusted. ** Marley23** does not deserve full credit for a pitting for this thread. I’d award no more than 10% credit. He doesn’t even really have to polish his jackboots, since I didn’t mar the shine.

Marley23’s general tone is horribly condescending and know-it-allish. It has been for quite some time. It would be great if the other, older mods, who are really trying to make the new SDMB work, would reel him in a bit.

While I’ll admit that I’ve had my moments with Marley23, what in particular about the threads in the OP cause you to feel so? Seriously, both of his actions are almost exactly what I would have done.

It’s not necessarily the actions taken, it’s the way the message is communicated to the posting community. Any questioning or follow-up to his decisions are met with completely unnecessary snark. There isn’t a better example of what I’m describing than his responses to this very thread. He rudely dismisses what he doesn’t agree with and gives condescending “duly noted” responses. It’s just not helpful.

I’m desparately searching for the “rude” parts. Haven’t found them yet.

And that’s my concern with these new rules. They seem to give the moderators quite a great deal of discretion. And while that may be fine if everyone was on the same page, there doesn’t even seem to be an agreement on what is rude.

“Don’t be a jerk” offers us a great deal of discretion as well.

And some of you are demonstrating why that’s a bad idea. Mods are now immune to proper pitting, but we have to walk on eggshells in this forum, and y’all are free to snark away.
