Scariest Web site?

And by “scary” I don’t mean “really poorly designed,” I mean any that present a good interactive (or not, I suppose) experience that would bring a chill and a smile to this horror lover? And yeah, I’ve seen most of the videos that have a sudden image of some ghost or ghoul with a loud scream to startle the viewer; I’m looking for something with a spooky atmosphere, something that attempts to create a sense of dread and foreboding as opposed to cheap jump-scares. Any suggestions?

When I think of scary, I think of this.

I’ve had no luck finding the name of the site, but awhile back someone posted a link to a page where you tour a macabre series of rooms photographed in an abandoned factory somewhere in Eastern Europe. Nothing (much) happens, yet the whole place is eery as Hell.

This should win.

Ah, I am familiar with Zombocom. Good times. But, lest this turn into a “weirdest WTF sites” thread… Seriously, any sites out there that would appeal to someone who prefers 1963 The Haunting over Saw?

If you google ‘ruins of Detroit’ you will see sights that will haunt you…

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

That’s the first website I’ve ever wanted to punch.

Scary but interesting: Exit Mundi.

That site makes me want to hunt down its creators and show them my C-section scar, just to mess with their heads. I find it more infuriating than scary.

I don’t get it…it’s just that flashing light and the weird voiceover, right? Is there a link somewhere on it I’m missing, or does the voice just go on? (Not that the voice isn’t kind of creepy - just want to be sure I’m not missing anything.)

This maybe isn’t the kind of scary the OP is looking for, but sometime in the middle of the night, turn off all the lights, sit in silence, go to http://crimelibrary.com, and read through the stories of Albert Fish, Jeffrey Dahmer, Son of Sam…used to scare the bejeezus out of me.

www.99rooms.com

Not super scary, but definitely creepy. Best toured late at night, alone, with the lights out and the sound turned up on your computer. Many of the rooms are slightly interactive, requiring you to click on something specific before proceeding. The key is to move your pointer all over the place–even in the rooms where the pointer already has the >>> symbol on it you should move it around because some things will react to the pointer moving across them.

Well, I’ve got a couple of old favorite websites collecting artistic representations of death, but I think what would really be more along the lines of what you’re looking for is the SCP Foundation. Try reading SCP-701 for starters—don’t forget the incident report and document summary!

In a similar vein to the 99 Rooms website (although this has no special effects or anything), this GamblingOhio.com and forgottenoh.com - GamblingOhio.com is a neat and creepy tour of an old cartridge factory, a building that still stands very near where my parents live in Maineville, Ohio. Check it out!

The Dionaea House and the Page of Ted seem like pretty classic examples of this.

If you want to get into some weirder but less scary stuff, there is a strange ARG-kinda thing at http://www.hatshoe.org
This is more interactive, there seems to be puzzles hidden in the pages.

I loved Ted’s caving page. I actually downloaded and read the story that it was based on. It reminds me of HP Lovecraft in some way…

Are you kidding? You can do anything at zombo.com. Anything at all.

I remember finding one where it was a bunch of creepy stories. It really got to me. One was about a guy in a house in the woods where he wandered in to take shelter. It was dark and all night he noticed the pictures on the wall and they were of really evil things and they were so creepy. When he woke up in the day time, there was nothing but windows. Does anyone know this site?

That’s exactly what I was thinking about when I saw the OP title. I must have seen it a few years ago - I think I had to turn it off halfway through because I got freaked out.

Is there a list of all these emails? I don’t have time to read them all at once, but I would like to read them. Or is there some kind of synopsis. I was trying to skim but it seemed really long. What’s the overall arching idea?
