Ok, to business. We should try to hammer down the relevant dates and deadlines for this year relatively quickly, and also we have a number of ideas and proposals from last year that were tabled until now. Please feel free to make any additional proposals, but keep in mind that many structural/rules changes would have to be incremental in nature, as people presumably managed their rosters last year with the current set-up in mind. For now, the topics of discussion are as follows:

  1. Draft Date – Currently set for 9/5 at 8:30 PM Eastern, but that’s just a placeholder. Saturday, 9/4 is the final roster cut date for NFL teams, and opening day is Thursday, 9/9. Ellis has already suggested having an early draft, something like the week of August 25 (Wednesday). Fine by me, but take a look and figure out which dates/times are or are not good for you. Since it will be a short draft, it will almost certainly start late in order to accommodate the Pacific Time Zone folks.

  2. Keeper Declaration/Cut Deadline – Presumably this should be very late in the game. If anyone has a reason why it should be more than a couple of days before the draft, let me know.

  3. Off-Season Trade Deadline – For the moment there is no off-season trading of player’s rights and/or draft picks, but my inclination is to open trading within a week or two and have, again, a late cut-off relative to the draft. Thoughts?

  4. Divisional Realignment – In last year’s run-up, SenorBeef made a relatively well-received suggestion that we re-align the divisions each year according to last year’s finish. So, we could keep last year’s divisions intact, or group together teams that finished similarly (1-4 in one division, 5-8 in another, 9-12 in the third), or even set up some sort of half-measure/relegation system.

  5. Return Yards – Not everyone loved the idea of return yards counting at 25 yards/point, but making a huge alteration probably isn’t an option due to the need for incremental change. So, the question for this year is: Should the modifier be lowered to 30 yards/point, or kept as is?

  6. Waiver-Wire – Keep the auction system we had last year? If so, do the teams at the bottom of last year’s standings start out with more money than the teams further up? If so, what kind of differentials are optimal?

  7. Basic Keeper Structure – Should we move off of unlimited keepers (for seasons subsequent to this one)? We did land on it in part because time ran out and we needed a decision. Again, incrementality should be observed in any proposed changes.

  8. “Rule 5” Draft? – A goofy longshot, but a cute idea if nothing else. The basic idea would be to promote parity by having one or two rounds of an intra-league draft, where we poach players from each other’s rosters, worst teams first, and only a certain number from each roster can be protected (say, 15, off the top of my head).
That’s all I can think of at the moment. Final rosters from last year to follow.

Please note that, in organizing rosters according to position for this list, it’s entirely possible that I accidentally missed a player here or there. It is STRONGLY ADVISED that you double-check the list for your team before you treat this post as gospel. Last year’s rosters can, of course, also be found on Yahoo.

I won’t know my draft availability until August, so whatever you plan I’ll try to fit it in.

I like the idea of having off-season trading a month or two before the draft. Put me down for a yes for this idea.

I like the idea of realigning the divisions 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 (even though as the fourth place finisher, that would mildly screw me), but I’d also be down for a relegation system. However, I don’t know how many teams should be promoted/relegated.

Either or is fine by me. Honestly, I like giving return guys some value, I think it’s an unappreciated skill.

I say we keep the waiver wire system we had last year. I think it worked flawlessly.

I’m not sure we’d ever agree on any kind of salary structure (which was bandied about last year), so I think unlimited keepers is probably the best way to go. At least for now. I think any changes to the keeper structure would require enough discussion that it’d probably have to be figured out during the season (or post-season) and implemented the next year.

Meh. I’d vote no.

I like the league set up as it is, although I would actually prefer the Rule 5 draft idea to realigning the divisions by ranking- if we do it, I think we should limit it to one round, though.

I’m not opposed to realigning the divisions at random, or via seeding, but I don’t think it’s fair to put all the top teams in one division.

If we set a limit on keepers, it wouldn’t make much difference; we’re all going to be cutting a couple of guys we picked up mid-season anyway.

Incidentally, defending champion or not, I’m very open to trades. With Cedric Benson under arrest again and Kevin Smith returning from ACL surgery (and probably sharing carries with Jahvid Best, at best) I might be trotting out Michael Turner and Cadillac Williams…

  1. Don’t care.

  2. Don’t care.

  3. I’d prefer we be able to trade anytime. I’m getting married on 9/11, so the last week or two before the season are gonna be kind of nuts.

  4. No realignment at all. Parity comes through the draft and free agency. If we must realign, it should be to create 3 equal divisions. Setting up the worst teams all in one division, combined with the draft format, creates an immense incentive for teams to tank all their games as soon as they are eliminated from the playoffs, so they can get in the “loser division” next season. Your reward for working hard to make the playoffs as a #4 seed last year? We’re gonna hose you over by giving you the toughest schedule in the league. Horrible, terrible idea.

  5. Keep as is.

  6. Keep as is. I’d agree with a small bonus for the losers; but if we’re going to make every single rule benefit the people who did poorly last year, you’re frankly taking away my desire to be in a dynasty league.

  7. I’d like keepers to be significantly less than 100%. I think letting each team keep 15 players ensures that you’ll keep all your important guys, while still forcing you to make a few strategic choices (which are the essence of any game). Having an annual draft that includes a few mid-level veterans makes the draft more meaningful, more interesting and is a better way to create competitive balance than silly things like realigning the divisions every single season.

  8. Too complicated. Fewer numbers of keepers solves the problem.

Congratulations, furt!

  1. Draft date. Any time that doesn’t conflict (or preferably run one day before/after) another SDMB draft works for me. I’m going to be out of town probably so every draft time is equally a minor pain in the ass.

  2. Cut deadline. I figure we should give at least 2 weeks before draft day so people have plenty of time to sort through who will be available to make their draft plans.

The way I suggest we do the draft in general is to have unlimited keepers, and you cut as many players as you want draft picks this year. This was IIRC the consensus we reached last year. So if you have a great roster and don’t want to cut anyone and end up cutting only 2 people, you get a first and second round pick. If your team sucks and you want to gamble with rookies or other available players, cut 7 people and you get a round 1-7 draft pick.

This is also easy to implement technically - you say via the thread which players you want to cut, then Varlos can go in and set your remaining players as keepers in round X-25, backloaded. So you cut 3 people, and he sets up your draft as having round 1-3 picks and makes your picks in rounds 4-25 the people you kept. This way yahoo knows who’s an owned player, and the players available to draft will be only rookies and players who aren’t kept on a roster.

  1. Off-season trading. Support full offseason trade and I’d suggest it extend at least a few days after cuts, that way people have more room to make several-for-one type trades if they so desire.

  2. Divisional realignment. I’m not dead set on my suggestion of realigning based on finishing position.

I thought it might be an interesting way to make divisions competitive and give everyone a chance every year. The problem with the current system is that it’s more or less arbitrary - there’s not much meaning to our divsional setup. I guess that’s somewhat true of actual sports leagues - you pick some initial alignment and then the rivalry generates based on being in the same division after so many years.

I wanted to give divisions a try because it was a new feature and I thought it might add even more competitiveness to the league when you were watching out for yourself/your players, your opponent, and also maybe the guys in your division. And you’d get to play them each twice, making it more meaningful. And it’s alright, I don’t mind it. But it doesn’t add as much to a league as I hoped, so I wouldn’t mind even just scrapping divisions.

I’m not saying we should, just to consider it as an option if we can’t work out some division system that seems meaningful or leaves people happy.

I can understand the complaints that it would cater too much towards the teams at the bottom, and that’s fine. Even though I’m stuck at the bottom, I don’t want too much special treatment - having a reverse non-serpentine draft (like how the NFL does it) is enough for me.

The original discussion of how to determine/redetermine divisions starts on this page btw.

I would like to mention that being in the top division if we were to realign based on performance isn’t all downside - fantasy football is all about bragging rights, right? We could even rename the divisions accordingly to like “The elite” “the middle” “scrubs” or something. Being in the top division is a source of bragging and winning it even moreso. In general, in FF, I get the most fun out of beating the best, my most competant and active opponents. If I were in the top division, I would welcome the challenge of having to beat the best, and then brag endlessly when I did.

I’m not just saying this since I’d benefit by being at the bottom of the rung, since I made this proposal before the start of last season.

I just feel like performance-based realignment would give some meaning to the divisions, would have a side effect of some degree of parity (whether you view that as positive or negative). The downside is that only 2 of the top 4 teams could make it to the playoffs next year. I would add though that any sort of system where division winners get a playoff spot is subject to having a better team lose out on the chance due to being in a stronger division than someone who won a weak division. The only way to completely correct this problem is to drop divisions.

I like the idea. I’d still be for the idea if I was in first place instead of last.

If we did do a relegation system, we’d probably want year 2 (this year) to be a complete realignment, and work from there, since the original alignments from year 1 weren’t based on performance. And then from then on, move people up and down based on relegation rather than a complete realignment every year.

  1. Return yards. The discussion of return yards starts at post 9. I feel good cases were made on both sides.

My case was basically that in practice, it rewards players who were good players who also had a lot of special teams contributions which normally goes unrecognized. A pure returner wouldn’t suddenly be valuable because even a 1600 yard return season (only 3 players in the league last year hit that benchmark) is only worth 4 points per game. It wouldn’t be enough to justify playing them if that’s all they did. For instance, Stefan Logan (PIT) was the league’s third leading returner with 1746 yards, and yet his total score for the year was 68 points, so he was never worth starting. He’s ranked around the 90th best WR or so.

So return yards aren’t something that will dominate the league or something. I’m proof of that - I drafted the most combo WR/returner type guys and I got my ass kicked :stuck_out_tongue:

What return yards can do is give a boost to a multirole player like a 3rd RB or WR and make them a viable low-tier starter. The players who fit that category last year were guys like Josh Cribbs, Ted Ginn Jr., Percy Harvin, Jacoby Jones and Johnny Knox. I like to see guys like that get rewarded over their pure rushing/receiving stats. Pure returners still have no value, you’d never start one, but guys who help their teams in multiple ways get some recognition.

  1. Waiver wire. I like the FAAB waiver system. Maybe a moderate parity booster to people on the low end, like $3 or $4 extra per slot they finished from first. So if first got $100, 2nd would get $104, 3rd would get $108. But even without parity and everyone getting $100, I like the system more than a revolving priority system.

  2. Keepers. We had lots of discussion on this and worked up multiple good ideas that would be hard in practice to implement. Ultimately I’m fine with just having unlimited keepers. If we get the keeper numbers too low, it becomes too much like a keeper league and not a dynasty league. Having a high number of keepers like 15 would probably be adequate, but I like the current keep as many as you want system.

  3. Rule 5. I’d have to think about this one - seems like a lot of potential for frustration but it’d sure make the league kind of interesting.

I also wanted to respond to one of Furt’s objection to realignment based on finishing position. He says that there’s an incentive for a team who’s not going to make the playoffs to tank to get in the worst division. I agree that there’s an incentive, but we’re also all friendly players who know each other and I don’t think we’d purposely game the system like that. I wouldn’t. I think we can alleviate that particular concern with an honor system.

Took me a minute to figure out what that was for.

Thanks!

I could see a much better argument for performance-based divisions if this was the big league, and we had three seven-team divisions or something (“Yay, I got promoted this year”)… but performance-based divisions of four teams seem a bit pointless.

Now, if we modify the idea a bit, and promote just the top team in each division, and relegate the bottom team in each division, I’d be a bit warmer toward the idea.

It would also be cool if we dumped playoffs completely and simply went with a record-based championship, but I doubt anyone else would like that.

I hardly benefited at all from the return yardage points, but I like the system fine.

In point of fact, I only got significant return yardage points from DeSean Jackson, who would have scored well anyway but wound up outscoring everyone on my team but Matt Schaub (including running backs)!

But in order to do that, we’d need to do a one-time realignment based on performance, and then promote/relegate from there. Otherwise in the current setup, who’s the “top” division? What would the promotion order be?

I like playoffs, but I’m not completely attached to them. I’m a little more sympathetic to a points-based championship after the absurd hosing I received in the big league last year.

Yes, and I’d be okay with that as long as it was, as you note, a one-time total realignment. That said, it should be noted that Hamlet would have missed out on the playoffs last year in a performance-based division system, despite comfortably outscoring everyone (including me) in the regular season.

Plus, you’d have to decide whether to realign based on points scored or record; Deliverance tied for the second-worst record last season but outscored 7 teams.

Well, assuming that he’d have ended up in the same division with the people who had more wins despite outscoring him. I take your point that it could happen. There’s a certain amount of risk of this sort of thing even without our system and generally any time you don’t play a pure points-based leauge. For example I was the highest scorer out of 20 players in the big league, yet couldn’t make the 8 team playoffs. (Yes, I’m still not shutting up about that!)

That’s an interesting point. I would say based off the yahoo rankings (based on wins, with tiebreakers) but I suppose we could do this any way we wanted.

I can get behind this. Thinking about it a bit more, a total realignment every year would be pretty stupid and pretty unfair to the top teams. But I can also see the logic in keeping the divisions as they are as rivalries have already started to form somewhat.

Speaking strictly for myself, going 4-0 at the end of the season against my division opponents to make the playoffs was hugely exciting.

Hell no! I love playoffs. A record-based championship knocks out nearly everyone much too early.

I think it should be record, as points scored is just a fun stat, not a meaningful way to rank teams.

IME, depending on “we’re all freindly here” is a good way to make it unfreindly. Even if people don’t obviously tank (leaving the starter slot empty, etc), they can subtly tank by choosing sub-optimal lineups; and even if they don’t do that, you create the possibility that other people think they are, and then there’s suspicion, etc.

Yes, people might tank so they can drop one more slot in the draft, but that’s less likely, and a far smaller reward.

There are many other ways to help out the weaker teams that are far more transparent, fair and unabusable.

But points scored reflects the relative strength of each team more accurately.

  1. Draft Date
As in the other thread, I vote this league’s draft should be the week containing August 25th to give us more space between the 5 SMDB drafts. This league has the shortest draft, which means it has the least need for up-to-the-minute roster information.

  2. Keeper Declaration/Cut Deadline
Because the cut players effectively make up much of the draft pool itself, I think the keeper/cut deadline should be exactly one week before the draft. So maybe set the deadline as Thursday the 19th and draft on Thursday the 26th.

  3. Off-Season Trade Deadline
There shouldn’t really be any trading until everyone is present and accounted for. I like August 1st as a natural start for offseason trading, but if we do an early draft like I suggest, mid-July is probably a better time to open it up. Maybe exactly 1 month before the keeper/cut deadline?

Also, offseason trading should probably end at the same time as the keeper/cut deadline for logitistical reasons. You really don’t want to have to have the commissioner keep going in and editing the keeper draft picks, which is exactly what he has to do for every trade after the keeper/cut deadline. I say have nne of that, and instead everything locks down for a week before the draft.

  1. Divisional Realignment
As one of the very worst teams in the league, I vote for realignment to favor the good teams. Specifically, complete realigment similar to tournament seeding ala NCAA hoops or tennis grand slams. The top 3 teams go in separate divisions, as do the bottom 3. Seedings based on total points as a better reflection of quality. So the divisions might end up being, based on point rankings:
    1st, 4th, 7th, 10th
    2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th
    3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th
This rewards the best teams by giving them the best chance to face each other in the playoffs, and keeps the head-to-head matchups as reasonably fair as can be expected.

  2. Return Yards
Don’t care. If I’m needed as a tiebreaker, I vote status quo.

  3. Waiver-Wire
Don’t care. If I’m needed as a tiebreaker, I vote status quo.

  4. Basic Keeper Structure
Unlimited keepers, absolutely. That’s the main draw of a dynasty league.

  1. Draft Date -I’m fine with any Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday time. The earliest I can do any other day is 7 PM Pacific

  2. Keeper Declaration/Cut Deadline The day before the draft works for me.

  3. Off-Season Trade Deadline Open it as soon as possible.

  4. Divisional Realignment – I’m fine with any divisional set up.

  5. Return Yards --Keep it as it is

  6. Waiver-Wire – Keep it as it is.

  7. Basic Keeper Structure – Unlimited keepers

  8. “Rule 5” Draft? – Sounds too hard to implement.

Any day except Thursdays are good with me (but if I have to miss it, no big deal)

Agreed.

Would we keep the same review period as with the regular season?

I like Ellis Dee’s suggestion.

Kept as is.

Kept as is.

I don’t really know how I feel on this yet.

I think this could be too complicated. this could just as easily be done with having fewer keepers

  1. Draft Date
I am very flexible for draft dates, whatever is fine with me.

  2. Keeper Declaration/Cut Deadline

Sounds good to me.

  1. Off-Season Trade Deadline

Yeah we should be able to trade draft picks and players in the pre-season.

  1. Divisional Realignment

Eh, I thought the divisions were pretty balanced and there are no horrible teams in this league. I don’t like punishing the good teams from last year who might not even be good this year.

  1. Return Yards

Return yards suck so I would vote for lowering them.

  1. Waiver-Wire

I like the auction system we had last year, but it does seem fair for the bottom teams to have a bit more money.

  1. Basic Keeper Structure

I like unlimited keepers, so I would prefer we keep that format.

  1. “Rule 5” Draft?

Eh, no thanks.
