SDMB FF Dynasty League: Year Three

Welcome back! It feels like a jinx to start this thread before the NFL’s labor dispute is settled, but here goes. To doubly jinx this thing, it would appear that all 12 of us from last year will return, which is great. Ok, on with the show.

  1. Draft Date – Currently set for Friday, August 26th, but that’s far from set in stone. Even assuming you don’t have any specific plans for a date a month and a half from now, please chime in if, for instance, Fridays (or any other days) tend to be bad for you, or if you want to move the draft closer to the start of the season, or even if you’d just rather do it on a weeknight. Obviously the labor dispute could force us to move things around.

  2. Keeper/Cut Declaration Deadline – This will be one day before the draft, though everyone is encouraged to get it done earlier, or to post a provisional list as insurance.

  3. Off-season Trading – Trading is open.; feel free to discuss and finalize trades. Agreed-upon deals will be official, subject to a review period.
There aren’t as many rules/structure decisions this year as there were last year. This is hardly exhaustive – if I’ve missed something or if you have a good idea, let us know – but the topics include:

  4. New Scoring Categories – Yahoo has created some new optional scoring categories this year. They’re listed in this post, and a discussion follows in that thread. Do we want to use some of these? If so, which? And what would the point values be?

  5. IR Slots – I think everyone is probably in favor of adding a couple of these, so, barring any unexpected objections, I guess the question is: should there be 1, 2, or 3 IR slots per team?
Ok, that’s all for now. At some point we’ll have to post the end-of-year rosters from last season to this thread, but I don’t feel like doing it right this moment. I’ll do it soon, or someone else can, and in the meantime Yahoo has the rosters here.

As I said above, the deadline for keeper/cut declaration is (about) 1 day before the draft, but I would ask that you really try to get me a list at least a few days before that so I’m sure to have enough time to enter the keepers (and then you can revise it later if you want).

Also, I’ve noticed that no one has changed their team name in this league yet. In case there was some doubt on this point, feel free to do so … but don’t do it all that often – or just include your SDMB handle in the name when you do – since it is kinda important to know who goes with what team.

These are the final roster from last year. These lists are primarily here for posterity and for the sake of scouting out pre-season trades. If you’re going to use it as your definitive list when choosing whom to keep/cut, it is STRONGLY ADVISED that you double check on Yahoo to make sure your team’s list is accurate; I dragged these things from the Yahoo page manually, so it’s entirely possible that there’s a mistake somewhere.

I think the keeper/cut declaration time should be significantly sooner than 1 day before the draft - at least a week, maybe two. That way we can better assess our draft boards, knowing who will be available. I guess this might be a problem if it’s too far ahead of the draft, and we draft relatively early - you won’t be able to see if some of your borderline players are taking bigger roles with their teams or what. Since our draft is not going to last long anyway, I’d suggest we move it back a bit so we can see more of the preseason, since our draft will be focused on rookies and borderline players, and it helps to see at least week 3 of the preseason.

I also wonder if we should be able to trade players for picks. The idea of trading players for future picks in-season was rejected because people thought it might be bad for the long term health of the league - but trading players for draft picks for the upcoming draft doesn’t have the same long term implications and I think it should be allowed.

Also, someone take one of my damn tight ends. I’m banking my future on Jermichael Finley. Or I may run a 2 TE team because I’ve got some good ones. Jimmy Graham has a bright future.

I wouldn’t mind having a deadline for the *provisional *cut list of a week or 5 days before the draft, but good-faith revisions are going to be allowed regardless; if someone changes his mind with 16 hours to go and decides that he actually needs to keep/dump some fringe player, I’m not going to tell him no.

Last year our draft was roughly as early and it there weren’t any problems, but yeah, we might should make sure it’s after Week 3 of the preseason … or whatever this year’s equivalent might be. Really, I think this is something that’s going to depend on when and how the labor dispute is settled, what kind of preseason they eventually have, etc. No way to pick a hard draft date just yet, so for now we should just be thinking about guidelines.

It’s permitted. As you say, once we’re all assembled for the upcoming season there’s no real downside. (Personally, I’m in favor of allowing the measured trading of picks from the next draft in-season, but public opinion seems to be against me on that point.) Anyone who’s thinking about possibly leaving the league before the season should refrain, but otherwise have at it.

I’m fine with the current scoring for this league. It doesn’t seem right to change the scoring for a dynasty league unless something is broken.

I vote for 2 IR slots.
Also nobody trade for Beef’s TEs!!! I want another year of hearing how amazing his TE squad is.

How about being able to retain unused FAAB money from year to year? Might make waiver claims towards the end of the season a bit more interesting.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Finley went down early last year. I had to trade for Tony Gonzalez just to have a viable starter. I didn’t pick up Graham until the last week or two of the year. Tamme didn’t become significant until week 12 or so. So it’d be strange for me to brag about a non-existant TE squad. I think I may have mentioned once at the end of last year’s thread that I have TEs for trade, and then once again at the beginning of this year’s thread. So, yeah, I can’t stop talking about it.

I still love you Beef! <3

I just noticed that I accidentally left a player (Mike Williams, TB) off of my roster above. The corrected version:

VarlosZ
Matt Ryan (Atl - QB)
Tony Romo (Dal - QB)
Colt McCoy (Cle - QB)
Troy Smith (SF - QB)
Jason Campbell (Oak - QB)

Knowshon Moreno (Den - RB)
Jonathan Stewart (Car - RB)

Brandon Jackson (GB - RB)
Marion Barber (Dal - RB)

Larry Fitzgerald (Ari - WR)
Calvin Johnson (Det - WR)
Dez Bryant (Dal - WR)
Mike Williams (TB - WR)
Michael Crabtree (SF - WR)
Kenny Britt (Ten - WR)
Anthony Gonzalez (Ind - WR)
Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oak - WR)

Greg Olsen (Chi - TE)
Jermaine Gresham (Cin - TE)

Matt Bryant (Atl - K)

Pittsburgh (Pit - DEF)
Baltimore (Bal - DEF)
Kansas City (KC - DEF)
San Francisco (SF - DEF)

Any spare slots for a would-be player? Please? Pretty please?

As of now we’re full up; sorry. We did have a unexpected departure shortly before the draft last year, though, so it’s not out of the question.

Ok, apparently no one has been looking too closely at this thread just yet, because no one noticed the error I just found: in addition to leaving Mike Williams off of my own roster, as well accidentally omitting Hines Ward from Omni’s, I missed all of RNATB’s wide receivers. Oops. So here’s a list of the final rosters that should be accurate. At the least, every team has 25 players now, as they should.

By way of an apology, I’ve sorted each roster according to value, so the better players will be at the top of each section. (I didn’t put a ton of thought into the rankings, especially when it came to deciding who was your 5th best RB; this is mostly about getting players into the proper tiers.) This will help anyone who wants to scout out trade partners, and it makes it a lot easier to pick up on the various “idiosyncrasies” of each team, such as:

Ellis, with a problem at WR, has apparently decided to throw a ton of names against the wall to see what sticks (which is not a bad idea, considering). He has 11 WRs on this roster, but it’s probably the weakest WR corps in the league.

– On second thought, **Beef **is giving **Ellis **a run for his money in this category; only the presence of a number of a number of young players who might break out (but who are each, individually, unlikely to do so) redeems the group. Better trade one of those TEs for WR help, friend.

– **furt **is in desperate need of help at QB. He has one NFL starter on his roster … and it’s Chad Henne. Absent a trade, he has to pray that Philly trades Kevin Kolb before the season starts. Or, if he’s really desperate, he could use his 1st Round pick on a QB and hope the guy pulls a Marino.

RNATB’s RBs are roughly equivalent to Ellis’ WRs: he’s got Michael Turner, and then nine guys who are not NFL starters; Cedric Benson is probably the closest thing, but he doesn’t even have a contract right now.

– Running Backs in general are hard to come by. Only 8 of our 12 teams even have two legitimate NFL starters, and that’s if we’re being pretty generous with our definitions; we’d have to include: Jahvid Best, Ryan Grant, Joseph Addai, and Felix Jones. If we decide that those guys aren’t what we have in mind when we say “NFL Starting Running Back,” then only four teams have two starting RBs. In either case, I’d say that only three teams have “good” RB situations: **Stringer **(Arian Foster, Jamaal Charles, Ray Rice), **furt **(Mendenhall, MJD, Ronnie Brown), and *maybe *Justin_Bailey (Frank Gore, Matt Forte, Brandon Jacobs).

My QB situation is the best starter and no backup. So let’s hope he has Peyton-like durability.

My RB situation is actually a lot stronger than it looks at first glance. McCoy is a legit top 10 pick if we redrafted today. As far as I know, Tampa is going to give LaGarette Blount a try as their primary back and he has a top 10 scoring RB through the second half of the year. Ryan Mathews is in a great situation, so if he’s healthy he still has promise. James Starks very well may be the future in GB, they like him and Ryan Grant isn’t anything special.

My WR corps is pretty terrible. I think Braylon will be a star if he goes somewhere to be a #1. Otherwise, bleh. Davone Bess is a reliable 8 points a game. Johnny Knox may grow into the system there but he’s hit and miss with mostly miss. Bizzarely low TD counts. James Fucking Jones will surely take over the world. Randy Moss was ranked by Varlos below Louis Murphy, so I guess that’s probably a bad sign that he was my 2nd round pick in our fist draft. But he’s still more productive than my first round pick, Steve Slaton.

Finley, if he fully recovers, will be the top scoring TE over the next 5 years (Rodgers to Finley is gonna win me some games). I think Jimmy Graham could end up coming out of nowhere and being special. Gonzo has a year or two of top 10 production left in him. Not sure if Tamme has a future, but Clark is old and banged up. And Gronkowski had some huge games - those NE tight ends kept alternating who would have the big game.

My team is kind of crappy but they’re all young. My RB corps can turn into a long-term top 3 in this league I think if things work out well, but I’m gonna have to figure out how to get better WRs on my team.

Yeah, your team is the 4th one I alluded to that had two legitmate NFL starters, but which I felt came up just short of being a “good” RB situation. It may very well turn out to be good – even excellent – but there’s a lot of uncertainty around Blount and Mathews.

Ironically, Randy Moss probably serves the same function for you as a James Jones or a Louis Murphy: chances are he’ll give you nothing above replacement level, but he’s a guy with upside. We’ve thought of him as washed up before (when he left Oakland), and players of his caliber do a have a history of blowing the age curve, so it’s not out of the question that everything falls into place and he fives you a 1250/10, or even two of them.

I like Beef’s RBs a lot, but I just have a gut feeling about Matthews and Blount.

Check out our original draft results. I don’t we adjusted the dynasty format well at all. Youth and ceiling should’ve been at a much higher priority.

Sometimes we were on the right track but it just didn’t work out (I drafted Steve Slaton to essentially get what Arian Foster is now), but older players were way overdrafted. Ellis Dee missed the first few rounds which explains a lot of the anomalies but we had Tomlinson going 6th, Randy Moss at 16, Brady and Manning before Rodgers, Clinton Portis and Steve Smith (CAR) in round 2, Terrell Owens and TJ Houshmanzadeh over DeSean Jackson. I also picked Eddie Royal before Jackson - I was up in the air between them again - and that was a pretty huge blunder. Royal was looking like pretty awesome shit after like 90 catches in his rookie year.

Players like LeSean McCoy should’ve never lasted to round 7 - he was pretty clearly the future in Philly. Or Ray Rice in round 5.

It’s interesting to see how many of the first few rounds have already faded into uselessness. I didn’t really want Moss terribly (missed out on Calvin Johnson), but he was 31? and in a highly productive offense and freak of nature WRs can play at a high level until their mid thirties, so it wasn’t unreasonable that I’d get 4 good years out of him. It really wasn’t age-related decline that caused his meltdown so I guess I wasn’t exactly wrong. Steve Slaton just flat out dissapeared. I mean, I wanted a ticket on that Texans running game and I was right in that regard - but I had no idea that they’d just entirely yank Slaton. Should’ve handcuffed that.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the original draft?

How many of your original drafted players are still even on your team? I’ve got 7… some dynasty. Although 3 were traded away rather than just cut. One died.

My original draft strategy was to “draft for next year.” I wanted to take a couple established studs early and then fill the rest out with young guys who were getting starting opportunities. I still own 10 of my original players.

Thoughts on some key picks for me…

  1. (5) Matt Forte (Chi - RB)
    Traded for Vick.

  2. (20) Reggie Wayne (Ind - WR)
Don’t regret this pick at all, Reggie has anchored my WR corps for 2 years but he is 31 now. :frowning: The decline is coming.

  3. (32) Marques Colston (NO - WR)
Probably should have taken Welker here instead. Colston has been too injured to justify a 3rd round pick.

  4. (41) Marshawn Lynch (Sea - RB)
Well golly gee isn’t this a great pick. Coming off two 1000 yard rushing seasons, I thought I was being clever picking him up this late because he was ranked low due to his 4 game suspension served at the start of 2009. Aside from The Run he has been a total disaster since.

  5. (56) Ray Rice (Bal - RB)
Should never have gone this late.

  6. (104) Hakeem Nicks (NYG - WR)

  7. (113) Jamaal Charles (KC - RB)

My best picks of the draft obviously.

  1. (248) Mike Thomas (Jac - WR)

Nice value down here, Mike Thomas is pretty good now.

Can I use “My team was robodrafted” as an excuse? That said, my post-draft roster ended up looking very similar to how my team would look if I had drafted them myself.

I was eyeing Frank Gore as my number one RB and I got him early. I also wanted Donovan McNabb at QB. At 33, he was a bit old for a dynasty league, but I thought he had a few more big years left in him. Blunder on my part. I also skewed old on Tony Gonzalez, but he’s Tony freaking Gonzalez. The man was then, and still is, a god among TEs. I also had a hunch about picking up Brett Favre late and he turned into a good pickup for the first season.

10 of my 25 draftees are still on my team.

I’ll continue to bug the thread for any open spots <g>
