Is Michael Cera gay?

As above.

Saw part of an interview with him in passing and he seemed to be wearing bright red lipstick.

I don't get 'gay' vibes off him, but I don't get straight ones either.

His wikipedia page says nothing about being gay. Either he's not or he doesn't want to be pigeonholed, and really who can blame him?

Why is it so necessary for people to know celebrity orientations? If he wants to wear red lipstick, more power to him. Guys deserve to feel pretty too. If you're not angling for a date, who cares?

Lipstick isn't -- so far as I'm aware -- a gay accessory. Transvestites, for example, are liable to wear lipstick and just as likely to be heterosexual.

As regards Michael Cera, it could mean anything from that he's a transvestite, to that the makeup person who prepared him for the interview thought that his lips were too pale. I would lean towards the latter, minus any other information.

He was dating the (female) asian comedian from Juno a while back, so at least as of a few years ago he was into chicks.

You clicked on a thread with the title "Is Michael Cera gay?", went to wikipedia to see if you could find the answer, and then decided to give the OP grief about being curious about celebrities sexual orientations?

I don't think he's gay because apparently I'm his doppleganger and I'm not.

It was comedian Charlyne Yi from Knocked Up (not the same actress from Juno).

Not sure Michael Cera is gay. By all accounts, no. Just Canadian and somewhat soft spoken. He certainly isn't afraid to embrace some homoerotic situations, but then that's typical of his crowd. As for lipstick... is that a gay male thing now? I thought it was only for (some) lesbians. Maybe it was just spray tan build-up.

If you're referring to Charlyne Yi and her movie Paper Heart, that was basically a publicity stunt/act for the film. There were actually two levels to it - the fake on-screen romance that was 'real' for the documentary, and a pretend off-screen one as well. It's entirely possible they really were dating and denied it, but it seems to not be the case. Actually, I don't much care one way or the other, but I found it in reviews of the film.

Anyone else read the OP as "saw him passing ..." ? Of course he'd be wearing lipstick in that case.

(Though not to belabor the point, transvestite != transexual != gay).

While I doubt he's gay, the dude basically has almost no masculinity to him. At all. I rather depsite the girl-boy look that's going around. Granted, I don't spend my time looking at guys, but geez, can't we have some manly men? They don't all have to be Ahnold to be manly. Michael Douglas, Al Pacino, many other great old actors: they had balls and you knew it. The young crowd often seems to me to almost ashamed of themselves.

Take a look at Scott Pilgrim. Cera, even though he was OK for the role, was self-effacing almost to the point of vanishing. Every single one of the 7 Evil X's along had more screen rpesence than he, despite their appearance being very limited... except for the equally effeminate twins.

Oh heck. I blame the Japanese . Tidus, Vaan, that guy from FF9: it's all Final fantasy's doing? What ever happened to great old manly characters like Cyan, several different Cids, Auron?

I think this would be an IMHO question, if you want to post it there.

Best wishes,

He reminds me of a local comedian here in Australia, Josh Thomas. And Josh is gay.

Maybe his lips were red because he had been sucking on a cherry popsicle?

If it's on wikipedia, I would guess the celebrity in question doesn't care. Since it's not anything further would be prying. I'm actually guessing the OP went to wikipedia, didn't find the answer and then came here. But, in general, I don't spend my days wondering if random celebrities are gay. Frankly, I think it's weird that so many people do.

Kind of on the fence, but... I think no. He tends to be really, really quiet--almost brusque--in interviews, and I imagine he just likes to be private about his romantic life (whoever it may involve).

Ellen Page, on the other hand, strikes me as gay in the same way Jodie Foster and Queen Latifah are--they don't discuss it publicly and it's not part of their public image, but there it is. I could be (probably am) wrong, but you never know.

I'm not even sure he's not a Ken doll. Is this the lipstick interview from the OP?

OTOH, has anybody ever seen Michael Cera and Prince Poppycock together?

I read an interview in Empire (a UK movie review magazine) and he said he gets this question a lot. He said that he's not gay. He went on to say that he's not really into sex at all; he's had sex a few times and says that it basically does nothing for him.

If true (I'm not doubting Gus but sometimes reporters contort the real words a bit) it's a strange thing to admit in an interview.

Why? Asexuality is as real as (and considerably less understood than) any other sexual orientation.

Because he's an actor who, nebbishy and non-threatening though he may be, often plays the romantic lead and thus has a lucrative career that depends to some degree on being viewed as a sexual being. Basically, the same reason that if Taylor Lautner or Justin Bieber were gay (which to my limited knowledge neither is) it wouldn't be a great idea to own up to it just yet as their earning potential might be damaged. (I'm not advocating the closet but the "I don't discuss my private life" route.)

I question this basic premise. Who views Michael Cera as a sexual being, even in a limited way? I've never heard anybody express any sort of sexual desire for him or attraction to him, and I wonder if people would like him more as an actor if he did have any sort of sexual energy.

He was interviewed in a recent issue of Rolling Stone and his sex life came up. He admited to losing his virginity around 17 and stated he's had a pretty steady, if uneventful, sex life ever since.

I've heard the gay rumors about Ellen Page much more than Michael Cera, but I think for both it comes to the fact that they're young, considered an It Girl/It Boy and have no noticeable social life. That confuses the gossiphounds who expect every actor to be drinking and whoring it up all the time.

Apparently the producers of Juno, Scott Pilgrim, Superbad and any other movie in which his sex life is a plot point.

Yeah... but... he's in that crucially specific role of "believable virgin or sexual naïveté".

Not asexual per se, but certainly either pre-sexual or pre-sexual blossoming...

In that same Rolling Stone interview, he relates a story where a female fan comes up to him and squeals "Oh my god! You're Michael Cera!" He says yeah, yeah, and then she asks "Can I suck your dick?"

I don't think that's an uncommon occurence for any actor.

I think this is yet another instance of "not gay, just Canadian." It's a common phenomenon.
