What Are Some Slang Names For Recreational Drugs?
I was reading a book about the Carpenters and they were saying how Richard especially but even Karen took drugs.
They used names of some of these drugs and I had to look them up. I could kind of figure out that Barbies = barbituates Bennies = Benzedrine Tuinal = Christmas trees So I was wondering what other slang or street names for recreational drugs there are. I know roofies = Rohypnol I don't know too much. Also if you name then, and they aren't obvious, can you say why they are nicknames as such. Obviously Barbies and Bennies are just shortned names of the long form of the drug. But I think Christmas trees for Tuinal is stretching it a bit. I mean does this look l ike a Christmas tree? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuinal |

Back in college a friend of mine and I used to snort (amongst other things) Dexedrine. When I had it all ready to go, I'd get her attention by sticking my head out of whatever room I was in and saying "Come On Eileen." I thought it was clever since the band that sings that song is called Dexys Midnight Runners and Dexy sounded like Dexedrine. Found out years later that the name Dexys Midnight Runners was named for the drug Dexedrine...how appropriate.

Did anyone ever actually call it that? I saw it in drug scare pamphlets, but I never heard anyone call it that.

I know a woman who wrote that somebody 'used her ass a surface for doing molly'. I suspect this is a drug reference but keep forgetting to ask.

A "lid" referred to a baggie (couple fingers) of pot (which could be had in my day for about 10-20 bucks). Ragweed was low quality pot.
Snow was cocaine. Like grandpa Simpson up there, this was in the coughcough70sahem.

From a TV news story about a police operation targeting drug users advertising on Craigslist ("Snow Bunny wanted for weekend encounter") I learned that "Tina" is a popular slang for crystal meth.
In the 70's pot was "bud", "smoke", "weed" or sometimes "bo" referring to Colombian - consume it in the popular manner and you were "smokin' dope". I've *never* heard anybody call it "Mary Jane" either. For reasons I don't understand heroin is called "blow".

MDMA (Ecstasy) = X or XTC. I've heard Ravers, Candy or Vitamin E too, but there's a metric ton of slang for these things.

Purple Drank / Sizzurp = cough syrup (codeine and promethazine), mountain dew, and jolly rancher candies.
Although there are loads of names for Ecstasy, in my younger days the most popular form of E was Mitsubishis, or 'Bishis. Before that Doves were the most iconic "brand". |

My favorite: goofballs for barbituates.
"These damn kids today are all hopped up on goofballs!" I love some of the fanciful names for the various varietals of marijuana. "Bolivian Mellow Master", "Nanaimo Dreamleaf", "Huntington Ditchweed", "Johannesburg Flying Carpet Ride Ticket", etc. |

Yes it is.
Bluelight MetaFilter No Slang.com Drug Slang Translator It appears to be regional slang (Detroit & Chicago). The links refer to "blows", but when I was a cab driver (on the overnight shift) in Detroit I only heard people call it "blow". |

Funny story about that. When we were kids we called it that ironically, because it was the purest crappy ragweed. (Was raised in Anchorage, spent 40years in AK, up until the end of 2010)
Apparently that's no longer true. I don't know, having been out of the loop for several decades, but I guess it's now got some of the highest THC content in the world. |

Yeah, I never heard that one either. H and D (horse and dope, often by the letters alone) were always pretty common. Never heard IRL "scag" or "junk." I've heard people call weed "dope" on TV and such, but it was always heroin when I heard people IRL use the term "dope."
For blow, just a little index finger rubbed on the side of a nostril seems to be sufficient. Last edited by Jaledin; 11-04-2011 at 10:06 PM. |
