What Foods Will You Absolutely *NOT* Eat?

No matter how good anyone says it is, no matter how much cultural pressure I'm under, no matter which 5-Michelin-Star chef cooked it, no matter how fresh or exquisite the ingredients are, I will not eat:

1. Organ meats (liver, sweetbreads, etc.).
2. Anything spicier than Taco Bell™ Medium sauce.
3. Anything that is still wiggling.
4. Freshwater fish.

You?

Green Bell Pepper ("Capsacins"). They make me gag and pollute anything that is cooked with them.

Wow. I thought I was the only one. I will try anything once, unless it has bell pepper in it. One slice of bell pepper that falls onto a pizza ruins the whole thing and it is a sure bet that it will end up on my slice.

Chitterlings and insect larvae in Vegimite sauce? Sure I'll try that, does it have bell peppers?

Anything cabbage-y that's been cooked. Hated them since I was a child. Brocolli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts need nothing more than a quick blanching to still make me gag. Raw is ok.

Bugs.

Not fond of squid tentacles either, but don't mind calamari rings,

God help me but I can't enjoy an olive. I a year and a half working at a french bakery and I ate an olive almost every day (green, black, kalamata, you name it) but I couldn't bring my palate around to them. They poison anything they're cooked in. That salty briny flavor just kills me.

Offal of any kind, with the exception of Jewish food. You can do delicious things with chicken liver.
Blood-anything
Squid/Octopus
Black licorice

Other than that, I'll eat just about anything. I might not like it, but I can eat it if I have to. The above are the dishes I would "walk out of my boss's dinner party and risk getting fired" rather than eat.

I'm guessing I'd say no to some of the more exotic things that people have mentioned, but the odds of having an opportunity to say no are slim, so I'm not going to spend much time pondering yes or no.

I can stomach, but usually avoid, Miracle Whip and mustard. I don't like okra by itself. And I have to assume that anything labeled spicy is too hot for me to handle. Also cilantro usually tastes like rotten meat, although as I've gotten older the effect has been milder. So if there's only a little, it's not as big a deal.

Pretty much. However, I might draw the line at the live seafood stuff (well, except for oysters and things of that nature) in the other thread. Balut I would try at least once. I grew up on organ meats and blood sausages, so none of that kind of stuff is a big deal for me. I'm not a fan of all organ meats (like, I'm not really one for kidney), but liver is awesome and blood sausage can be fantastic. I suppose it helps that I grew up eating Polish kiszka and loving it before knowing exactly what it was.

I think I'd try anything served to me in a fine dining tasting menu situation.

Other than that unlikely scenario I will not eat okra on it's own. Cooked in a gumbo or other concoction is fine, but never just okra, fried or otherwise. No thanks.

I do try hard to avoid anything that's hot just for the sake of being hot. (Insanity peppers, and the like).

Oatmeal...as in the hot cereal. I love oatmeal cookies, but hot cereal, any kind of hot cereal, is to barf. There is no good reason why, since I love savory things of similar texture, but there is just.something.about.oatmeal.

Raw oysters.

That's pretty much it for now, as far as 'things that are generally consumed in a western diet.' I'm sure there are things in third world countries and other cultures that are crazy bizarre that would make me not want to eat them, but as far as things that are generally available in the US, that's about it.

I really, really dislike olives (by themselves), but I love olive oil and I don't go crazy if I get a bit of olive from my wife's side of the pizza.

Green bell peppers (I love other colors, but I hate the green ones)

Liver of any kind. Gizzards, hearts are OK.

Any kind of peppers. Don't tell me it's not hot; I don't care. In fact, pepper seeds are OK, but not the fleshy part. Tastes nasty and gives me massive indigestion. Even tiny bits chopped up and included in other stuff like soup or meatloaf.

Not that I necessarily dislike cake, it's more that upwards of 99% of all cake sucks.

Minty foods, unless the mint flavor is very subtle it makes me retch and feel sick in my stomach. This also extends to ice creams and candy other than actual mints.

That's good measuring stick. I would risk my job over:

Organ meat of any kind (don't tell me giblets or fried chicken livers are great; do you know what those organs do?)

Insects or bugs, alive or dead.

Snake

Anything with tentacles

Balut (I had to look this up and am VERY sorry I did. It's just wrong on so many levels.)

On the list of wouldn't-risk-my-job-but-work-hard-to-avoid:

Miracle Whip

Habernero chiles and their most of their kin

Garlic ice cream

Salted licorice and natto are on my list of things I have tried which I WILL NOT EAT.

Someday I'd like to see and consider trying hakarl, surströmming, and casu marzu.

Another thing on my NEVER EAT list is mackerel. I've tried it many different ways and just cannot stomach it. Which is weird to me because there are other oily fishes I do like, including herring, sardines and smelt.

In general, there are plenty of things I'd never go out of my way to eat, most seafood and organ meats, for example. But, if I were presented with them at a very nice restaurant or prepared by a great cook, or I'm traveling and that's the local food, then I'll at least try it.

But I absolutely will never, under any circumstances, eat brains of any kind. The idea squiks me out more than anything else (with the possible exception of eating eyeballs,) and on top of that it's not safe, what with things like mad cow, CJD, etc...

Sure, there's no mad pig disease now, but how do you know there won't be later?
