The McRib thread got me to thinking about how finicky an eater I am. I will not consume the following:
Liver…any organ meats, actually
Mayonnaise
Sour cream
lamb
Beets
Gizzards
Did I mention mayonnaise…I think I’m actually a mayo-phobe. I will not ordered sandwiches unless I’m 1000% percent sure that no mayo has been used.
…trying to think of something I won’t eat…OK, got one. Hamburger, cooked and drained, mixed with a can of gravy, over hamburger rolls. Mr. Salinqmind thinks it’s a basic food group, I think it’s dog food. In fact, I don’t care for hamburger in any form.
I’m with you on the mayo and sour cream, screw that crap. Any dish/sandwich that includes either, would be better without. And any dish that flat out requires either is a dish to be scorned, and absolutely not eaten. As a child, at a birthday party, I once bit into a cake that had frosting to which some tastebudless asshole had added sour cream! (I swear the fire was an accident.)
Out of this list, the only foods I will eat are:
[ul][li]Liver…any organ meats, actually[/li][li]Mayonnaise[/li][li]Sour cream[/li][li]lamb[/li][li]Beets[/li][li]Gizzards[/ul][/li]Though I’m not overly fond of gizzards. Too chewy. Just double up on the filtration units.
I roasted a chicken this weekend. Normally I throw the liver in the pot with everything else to make stock, but I read somewhere that that’s not preferred or whatever, so this time I found a recipe online for simple sauteed liver and cooked that up while waiting on the rest of the chicken to roast. Green onions, garlic, oil, salt, lemon juice, and chopped liver.
Okay, it wasn’t uni-level disgusting, but it was definitely not something I need to repeat. I feel pretty comfortable at this point saying I’m not a fan of liver.
But I’ve never got the outrage over mayonnaise–I find it totally innocuous when used in moderation. The only foods I feel strongly against are uni and–maybe just uni. I can even tolerate oysters now if I really need to.
I am with you on the mayonaisse. GAK! In the midwest, if you order a sandwich without mayo, they look at you like you just ordered a sandwich with no bread. Most of them think you are kidding and give you mayo anyway.
I cannot stand olives. At all. If there are olives on anything, I can’t even pick them off because the item has been thoroughly contaminated with olive juice.
Is this thread about foods we have tried and will never eat again or just foods we will never try in the first place?
Because all the foods I would list are foods I have tried before but would never eat again. I don’t really have any foods, other than crazy weird exotic stuff like eating beetles or head cheese that I would never even try.
I will try anything at least once. Foods I’ve tried multiple times and just plain don’t want:
blue cheeses (or most strongly-flavored cheeses)
natto
olives of any type.
most hard liquors, whisky in particular.
that’s about it. There are other foods I’m not a big fan of like liver and liver sausages; I can eat a little bit but after a few tastes the flavor starts to turn me off. I also really didn’t like the one time I tried sea urchin roe (uni) but I’ve been told that it’s no good if it’s been sitting around for more than a little bit, so if I get the opportunity to try fresh-er stuff I’ll give it another go.
I had a taco de lengua at the fair last week. Would have been good but she covered it with evil cilantro. I hates me some cilantro!!! Sure, people say it’ll grow on me and I’ll learn to like it, but I have tried to like it, and it just tastes worse every time!!
To me, the evil weed has a very overpowering flavor reminiscent of equal parts rotten grapefruit, kerosene, perfumey dish soap, and stinky paperwhite narcissus flowers.
