Salvador Dali question

The painting, "Persistence of Memory" - exactly what is that gray object one of the watches is draped over? It resembles a dead walrus. Anyone know?

Am I the only one who thinks "The Disintigration of the Persistence of Memory" is a better painting than the original?

I always thought of it as a dead mule.

Dead mules were very important to Dali at this point (1931). See his groundbreaking film collaboration with Bunuel, THE ANDALUSIAN DOG (1929).

And consider yourself lucky he didn't decide to use a priest instead.
