the painting with the melted clocks

i can’t remember the name of the painting with the melted clocks, nor the name of the painter. a friend of mine desperately wants to buy a print of this as a gift, but we can’t find it. help?

Salvadore Dali. The Persistence of Time.

“Persistence of Memory” (1931)

Salvador Dali

Just triple-checked. It’s “The Persistence of Memory.”

God’s honest truth, though, it’s far from Dali’s best. Try to find a print of “Illumined Pleasures” (1929), “Autumn Cannabalism” (1936), or “The Matamorphosis of Narcissus” (1937).

For what it’s worth, Dali did a “sequal” to “The Persistence of Memory” in 1952-4 called “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory.”

Sir

ah, you guys rock!

thanks for checking sir rhosis. i’d pass on your recommendation, but the person for whom the gift is intended has a special preference for this painting.

D’oh! Any second now Satan’s gonna show up in here and notice that I had the Anthrax album named The Persistence of Time inexplicably in my head when I replied.

The “e” at the end of Salvador is just plain ignorance.

make sure you see the movie Dali made…

“the Dali is not insane”

's oaky, Montfort. I had to take my print down from the wall and check, then went to a couple of books I have on Dali. I often call it “Persistence of Vision,” but hardly anyone catches me on it.

Sir

And handshakes and a hearty congratulations all around for avoiding the obvious “Hello, Dali!” and “Dali Lama” puns.

Dali factoid:

When SD wanted to take a little nap (he was, apparently, a prolific napper) he would fall asleep in an upright chair, holding a teaspoon in one hand. As he drifted off, his hand relaxed, dropped the spoon, which on hitting the tile floor, woke him up. This, he claimed, was a sufficiently restful nap.

My screen saver is a slideshow of about a dozen of Dali’s works. The movie that was referred to is “Andalusian Dog” (Chien Andalusian (or something pretty close to that) in the original Spanish). Surrealism at its best. Try not to flinch when the razor blade slices across the woman’s eye.

Un chien andalou (1929)

The original The Persistence of Memory is hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It was a lot smaller than I expected.

There’s a museum in St. Petersburg, Florida that is all Dali. He’s my favorite painter, and this place is amazing! He’s got a few pieces that are about 18 feet high and 8 feet across with the most amazing detail. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend a visit.

try ebay.com for a print. Or once youfind it online, you could print it out & put a frame around it :-0

Cessandra, I have a print of The Persistance of Memory. I have no place to put it on my walls and no intention of putting it up if I did. I would love to give it away to someone! Would you like to have it?

The businessman who owns the paintings used to have them on display near Cleveland, Ohio. I visited the galleries several times when I was a teenager in the 1970s.

Then Florida offered him a tax break or something, so like a spoiled little girl, he packed up his Dalis and moved down there.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

When Salvador died he left his family several thousand signed and numbered blank sheets of paper, so that the family could issue genuine signed and numbered Dali prints after his death when their value increased.

There is also “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory.” That also has the melting clocks, er, even more melted.

whoa, are you serious? i would adore you forever!
