SDMB Chivalry: Medieval Warfare server

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first person (or third) medieval combat multiplayer game. It's like Mount and Blade but with more depth to the combat (and no horses, which I think are unbalancing to this sort of game). It has more tactical depth (more weapons and weapon types, stamina system, feinting, shield bashing, combo moves, classes), more game modes (objective based, CTF, king of the hill, and last team standing in addition to the normal free for all/team deathmatch), better graphics, better balance (it was designed from the ground up to be multiplayer only, M&B is more tacked on) and more visceral combat.

The combat in the game is the most brutal in a game that I can recall. You can hack off body parts. If you shoot someone in the neck with an arrow you can hear a horrible death gurgle. Your camera stays tied to your head even if you get hit or killed so you can briefly see your head flying off or get smashed in - makes death feel more real than in other games.

Some videos. Here's a basic and advanced tutorial to give a feel for how the game mechanics work. Here's a big fight on a 64 man server.

It's still on sale on steam for $12.50 (or $37.50 for a 4 pack) until 10am tomorrow morning, so if it seems interesting
Anyway, we've been having a lot of fun with it. And the server rentals are unusually cheap at only $.75/slot, so I decided to rent a server. I just haven't decided how many slots yet. We could get a small 12 man server and it would probably be enough to host us most of the time, and smaller servers are better for FFA and perhaps KOTH and some of the smaller game modes, but of course not as epic for big objective based battles. But small servers are kind of cozy, not as chaotic, and the SDMB players would make up a greater portion of the server instead of getting lost in the crowd.

On the other hand, a big server gives us flexibility. We could always lock it for a private game. We could have the big epic team objective battles. More chaotic, less cozy, more expensive.

If I get a small server, I'll just pay for it myself. If people think we'd benefit from a larger server, I'd ask volunteers to chip in like $5 towards it.

So anyway, if you're reading this today, grab the game at $12.50 on sale until tomorrow. And I'd like to hear what people want to do as far as getting a server. I was thinking maybe we could have regular gaming nights like we used to do with our TF2 server.

I'd chip in $5 for a server, especially if we can get into some quasi-organized teams with actual tactics and strategies involved, not just incessant, arm-flailing axe-murdering... though that has its moments, too.

Well if we had as many pubs as SDMBers on the server, we'd all be on mumble together so we could coordinate. BTW, if you're interested in playing with us but you aren't on my friends list on steam yet, add me.

Tried it last night and really enjoyed the game. Im getting a little burned out on mechwarrior and my Dayz buddies are playing Guild Wars so it is nice to have another game to try. Reading online it is amazing how a fairly simple combat system can lead to such complex fights.

I'll be happy to chip in too.

I was watching the 1 on 1 duels with Total Biscuit and man, there's a lot of depth to this.

I'd chip in from time to time, but can't guarantee anything for now (I'm currently unemployed and working various odd-jobs).

I'll say that I definitely prefer the bigger (10 on 10 or more) objective battles, but had a great time last night on a server with 16 total (which gradually dropped to 5 on 4) players alternating team deathmatch & last team standing.

I have to say that I don't like free for all, but that's mostly because I stink at it.

I purchased the game.

While I don't necessarily have a lot of time for gaming these days, I'm happy to kick $5 toward a larger server if that's what the community decides, even if I won't even have much time to game on it.

Well I'm going to order it today, just deciding on the number of players.

I want to have a server that runs through every game mode for the sake of variety. Modes like FFA and King of the Hill work better on smaller (8-16 man servers), games like team objective work better on big (24+) player servers, although all modes work well enough at all player levels - it just becomes more crowded and chaotic for some game modes, or a bit empty on others.

So I'm thinking 16-20 would probably be ideal since you could comfortably run every game mode. We could still have small, cozy SDMB games by scheduling games and locking the server as we did with TF2, and then opening it up as needed.

Also, make sure you've got the game, installed, set up, and go through the tutorials today. I'm going to try to host our first game on our server around 5 pacific/8 eastern tonight. And of course get on our mumble. Get that installed and set up. Our mumble server is (remove the slash) silverbolt.bluefang/solutions.com port 32768.

Alright, our server is up. I decided on 16 slots. If we feel like we need more we can add them later.

Server is called SDMB Dallas All Game Mode Rotation

You shouldn't need it, but in case you do, the address is 69.162.113.84:9816

But the better way to connect is to pull up the server list (make sure you aren't filtering anything), sort by name, go down to S for SDMB, then when you find it right click on it and hit add to favorites. In the future you can use the favorites tab to log on.

If you're going to play, make sure you hop on our mumble.

Haven't tried much of the new stuff yet but I love the addition of alternate swings from the opposite directions.

We're going to try to get a bunch of us on today (friday) around 8 eastern/5 pacific. We'll lock the server so it's just like the 10 of us. Try to be there. Also, probably be drunk.

Great turnout, we had 15 people throughout the night and 12 at once. Lot of fun. We'll probably play again tonight.

For the first week, we've played every day, but I'm guessing it'll eventually turn into a 2 nights a week sort of thing, since it's not the sort of game you can play every day and not get burned out, but it's fun to play a few hours on a regular basis. So maybe scheduled games on Tuesday/Sat like TF2, or something like that.
