O. J. Trial forgotten

It is impossible to listen to all the tv talking heads on the Zimmerman case. But it seems that with all the grand generalizations (Ok, what if X was been black and Y white, etc etc.), OJ seems not to be mentioned at all. Do we now think OJ was not guilty? Do we somehow think that “race” was not involved, or was it just celebrity and football? Does the concept that blacks are not treated “fairly” or “equally” in the so-called justice system include what happened to OJ?
One thing is almost for certain; most of us would have been convicted as we could not afford the colossal fees of those fine lawyers.

Oh, it did. For example, it was pointed out that with mixed race couples it’s normal for the police to avoid intervening, in the hopes that it will escalate to murder as it did. And it was also pointed out that the LAPD is so used to framing black defendants that it didn’t know how to handle one that was actually guilty, but under a spotlight so they couldn’t just use fake “evidence”.

But the fact that he was wealthy was most important, because in America money overwhelms every other factor including race.

By whom?!

Heck I don’t know who, it’s been years. But it was pointed out that unless the law forces them to do otherwise, the cops respond to domestic violence according to what category the people involved are, not according to who is guilty of what.

Man & woman of the same race: Arrest the man.

Interracial couple or homosexual male couple: Ignore the situation until it escalates to murder.

Lesbian couple: Arrest the bigger woman.

So, because a black man in California killed two people 20 years ago, it’s okay to kill an unarmed black kid in Florida? What the hell is your point?

I think the idea is that, because OJ Simpson was found not guilty of murder (and the murder of a pretty, blond, white woman at that), that proved the justice system isn’t prejudiced against African-Americans. You know, because if one African-American defendant could be acquitted, that proves that the American justice system is completely unbiased when it comes to race.

As others have pointed out, of course, it mostly proves that if you have the money for good enough legal representation, you’ll likely be acquitted.

To answer the OP, I think that the comparison is apples and oranges if you’re trying to address the issue of how race factors into the workings of the legal system. Of course, if you’re comparing how the legal system works for the rich vs. the poor, then I’d say this is just another data point that confirms the lessons of the OJ trial.

“Crimes of the Century” have a very short shelf life, especially when there’s an acquittal. Consider the Hall-Mills Case, which rivaled OJ for media coverage (and surpassed it for dramatic moments). Few people have heard of it today.

I don’t buy that OJ’s money bought him the acquittal. It might have with a different jury, but with the one he had, I think a one-eyed monkey could have defended him, and they would have acquitted–at at a much lower rate.

I think that we need to keep the Lizzie Borden verdict in mind while talking about Zimmerman.

Of all the stupid things you have posted here that is by far the stupidest. Congratulations.

Part of what Simpson’s money bought was professionals at studying potential jurors. If Simpson ended up with a friendly jury it wasn’t due to happenstance.

I thought I heard somebody mention all of the white rioting the went on after the OJ verdict…could have been a dream though.

Pretty sure there was some talk of the new hybrid races that come into play… OJ being a blaucaisian and Zimmerman being a whispanic.

I read (at the time) that several of his legal team were working “pro bono”-presumably for the publicity the trial would bring them.
Did Shapiro experience a big jump in his business , because of the OJ trial?

 And how is what I said “stupid” at all?

I’ll have go back and check but I think you spelled everything correctly. So everything except the spelling.

Thanks. Mostly cliche & boilerplate answers I anticipated: apples and oranges, one case proves nothing at all, so what’s your point, blah, blah, blah.
#1 Black or white most of us would have been convicted on GZ’s situation as most of us could not raise the vast amounts of money to hire such fine legal teams.
#2 OJ got off. So did Geo. Z. Make all the excuses you want, but you cannot avoid the facts. Reach your own conclusions.

I’ve reached some conclusions about you…

You sound like GLADOS from Portal. I can see her giving exactly that kind of back-handed compliment.

Hey! It’s Iamnotivan! The guy who thinks all wimmens are just that stupid!

In other words I didn’t say anything stupid, you know it, but you aren’t willing to admit it. You just threw out that accusation as a random baseless insult and are now stuck with the fact that you can’t point out my “stupidity” because it isn’t there.

I know in New Jersey, and I think in most states, if the police are called into a domestic dispute situation and they see any evidence to violence, they have to arrest the violent offender and get them out of the property.
