The Great Seal of Detroit was designed after the great fire of 1805. One female figure mourns the city in ruins. Her Latin legend reads SPERAMVS MELIORA (“We Hope for Better Things”). The figure on the right seems to comfort her, and looks to a brighter future. Her legend reads RESVRGET CINERIBVS (“It Shall Rise from the Ashes”).
Many people believe the seal has proved prophetic on more than one occasion.
In 1967, after the race riots, people thought of the seal and its apt mottoes.
There is no fire in the present problems the city faces. But will the seal prove prophetic again? Only time will tell.
Here is the older version of the seal. And here is the version by the Spirit of Detroit (a famous statue in Detroit). Just scroll down.
Well, what do the rest of you think? Will the prophecy hold true (again)?
