SDMB Big League Fantasy Football 2013

Last Year’s Thread

Draft is scheduled for the same relative time as last year - Tuesday Sep 3 at 8:30pm eastern. That’s after week 4 of the preseason, since this league runs deeper than others, it’s more important to have all the information you can on the long shots.

Attending the draft is absolutely necessary for this league. It’s an auction format, and because of the 20 man nature of the league, yahoo’s default auction values will not draft a viable team. You have to be able to make the draft.

Everyone is welcome back, and I sent out invites a couple of weeks ago, but I’m starting the thread late. We won’t have that much time to allow people to get back - if you aren’t signed up relatively soon your slot may be given away. If you’re interested in joining this league, post in the thread or PM me.

Rules will start as being the same as last year but the floor is open to suggestions. Leftover auction dollars left to FAAB. Commissioner approval of trading along with clearly stated trade intentions being retroactively fixed on game day, Sunday through Tuesday waiver system… see last year’s thread’s OP for more info on these.

This isn’t mandatory, but please keep your name either the same as last year or something obvious based on your SDMB name. Every year when people change their names I have no idea who’s who, it’s hard to track in a 20 man league.

I have a proposal that’ll be controversial. I’m thinking we should maybe add another RB/WR/TE flex spot to the roster. Basically it takes everything about this league that’s awesome - the crazy depth, the need to hit on part time players and deep sleepers - and increases it just that much more. 20 more players will be drafted. It gives players an ability to show off their depth more, and gives a player who really hit it this year on sleepers to shine.

Even more radical suggestion: Make it a QB/WR/RB/TE flex spot. Only 32 QBs and 20 teams, so not everyone could start 2 QBs, so it’s probably a bad idea. It’d be interesting to see what it did to QB draft values. I’d personally be okay with this, but I realize it would be a pretty radical change.

Thoughts?

BTW, if you know you’re not going to make it this year, post now so we can recruit your replacement.

I think adding another roster spot just adds to the random luck factor at this point. I might be in favor of it if we just converted one of the bench spots to a roster slot (NOT QB/WR/RB/TE though).

It’ll also add another round to an already extremely long draft.

Yeah, don’t like that idea. It will probably just favor the guy who gets drubbed week 1 and has to throw all his waiver bucks at a long shot RB.

ETA: I can’t do a Tuesday draft as I have class til 9:15. Can we make it Thursday?

I’m good any day of the week, just as long as it doesn’t conflict with any of the other SDMB drafts.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join this year. I work from 330 PM-Midnight, and there’s no way I can slip out of work for a draft that takes this long.

Thursday is the start of the NFL season, so not practical. Can you make Monday or Wednesday? What time zone is the 9:15 you refer to? Eastern?

It won’t be that bad, it’s just another 20 picks, and by that time a lot of people will have a complete team and be able to leave early anyway… by that stage there’s not a large bidding war and it tends to go quickly.

I don’t think I’ll be coming back. While my Unrelated Siblings did better last year than ever before, I have decided to cut back on my NFL-related activities this year.

So, feel free to give my slot away to anybody. Have fun, all!

Can’t do Monday or Wednesday either. My classes are MTW. Could do Sunday. And yes, ET.

Can we please make the schedule so that every team has the same number of division games as every team in your division. I missed the playoffs last year because of that bullshit despite having the same record and more points. Or, just make the tiebreaker total points, not division win percentage.

It seems like the longest time was just spend by the people who weren’t in attendance, waiting for the draft to auto-pick someone for nomination.

I second this.

Thirded. And if there’s a way to create a co-commissioner, I volunteer to sign up and do this.

As with last year, I would rather just disband divisions. They’re fairly meaningless in this league and they don’t really add anything. They’re another artificial barrier to getting the best teams into the playoffs.

That said, if I can line up the schedule with some minor tweaks, I’ll do it. I don’t want to end up designing a custom 140 game schedule, which seems like it’d be a complicated mess - because every game you moved around would then require another one to be adjusted and so on.

Edit: Just saw the last post. If you want to do it, Munch, go nuts, I’ll figure out some way to allow it.

Well - I do like the idea of divisions, but completely agree with your point that it’s just another barrier. The problem with 20 teams is that there’s no REAL parity - we can’t play every team in 13 weeks.

If we keep divisions, what would everyone prefer:

Option A: Play each team in your division twice (8 total games), and pair your division up against another division for the last 5 games.

Option B: Play each team in your division twice (8 total games), and 5 random teams in the other 3 divisions.

Option C: Play each team in your division once (4 games), pair your division up against another for 5 games, then the 2 teams from the 3rd division, and 2 teams from the 4th division.

Option D: Play each team in your division once (4 games), then 3 games against each of the other 3 leagues.

To be honest, none of those appeal to me, I’d rather just play 13 different opponents. No one has been able to articulate the value of divisions in this league that I recall, it’s just that we arbitrarily decided to try it one year and people argue against change reflexively. I guess if we were trying to make divisons important, we’d go with A.

I think the one thing that divisions does is occasionally allow a weak team to still have a chance for the playoffs. Why that’d be a particularly good idea, I dunno.

Yeah, I vote no divisions. It’s fun trying to win your division, but in the end it’s such a mess. If everyone plays 13 other teams, that’s probably the fairest. No one is going to have a particularly easier or harder schedule.

I vote for no divisions too.
