Just got back from a showing (love those Thursday night “opening weekends”), and I have to say, I had a complete blast. Chris Pratt’s comedic timing is great and the rest of the cast was hilarious as well. I loved the characterization of Groot, especially. The MCU tie-ins all made sense and added nicely to its overall continuity.
I can’t remember the last time I laughed quite so much during a movie. I’ll probably end up seeing it again in the theater and I’ll almost certainly buy it on DVD when it comes out.
I also just got back from a showing. Definitely packed with one-liners. There were some very clever references to Kevin Bacon, and Jackson Pollack (in the funniest line of the movie.) Great voice acting by Bradley Cooper.
There’s a VERY unexpected character appearance in the post-credits stinger. No spoilers for that one - it’s better if you don’t expect it.
Not that it was necessary, or possible, but my anticipation is increased by just the above two posts. Thank you. I’m a bit apprehensive about Coopers’ Star Fox character, but any movie with Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling can overcome such trivial matters.
Multiple references to the first guy- which I caught- but I didn’t catch the reference to the second guy. Remind me?
Loved the movie.
In terms of MCU Continuity, one thing that bothered me . . .
Asgard deems the Collector’s museum to be so much of the utmost safety, that they entrust the Ether to his safe keeping.
Now, we find that:
his headquarters is nestled in the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in this galaxy . . .
Those in his employ tend to want to murder him at the first opportunity . . .
He himself is so stupidly irresponsible that he would leave a world-destroying Infinity Stone out in the open unguarded within reach of a disgruntled employee (whose species have elbows and can use them!!!)
Perhaps my favorite line in the movie:
“That was my favorite knife.”
(Was this Nathan Fillion? Wiki says he was one of the prisoners. This guy had a lot of make-up, I’d never be able to pick out an actor underneath that make-up)
How does this compare to the comic book version (the 2008 reboot upon which I understand it is based)?
Just from reading the Wiki bios of the characters I wonder if the movie significantly recreates everything even compared to the new comic book version of the team.
P.S. It seems that there is no color you can paint Zoe Saldana that could possible obscure the fact that she is one of the most beautiful women to ever have existed.
Oh, and much as I enjoyed Groot, there was no reason to have a well known actor associated with the role other than to have another name to put on the poster.
Bradley Coopper actually brought something special to Rocket.
Vin Diesel was good as Groot- there was subtlety and nuance in places. I certainly wouldn’t say “anyone could have done just as good a job”, but certainly a lot of people could have done just as good a job- including a lot od talented but non-famous people.
Vin Diesel is a comic-reading D&D-playing nerd. So we can imagine that he was probably pretty eager to get the part. If you can easily get a famous actor for your project, might as well.
Vin Diesel played a very similar characterisation when he was the Iron Giant, a very emotionally nuanced performance. He was therefore extremely appropriately cast as Groot.
I agree Vin Diesel was good. I don’t know anything about his nerd cred and I’ve never seen The Iron Giant, so I’ll grant “appropriately cast”. I’m just saying in this movie he doesn’t deliver anything that’s got to be delivered by Vin Diesel. from the Thread predicting Box Office
(Responding here so as not to continue “seen it” discussions in the box office thread)
You can’t really accuse them of tacking on a romance in this movie. They didn’t really do that.
There’s some sexual tension- mostly one sided coming from Star-Lord who’s back story already explains he’s looking to make a conquest of any hottie. There’s a love that develops among the group as they transition from loners to a quirky family. Gamora who happens to like nice men develops feelings for Star-Lord as she comes to admire him having at first thought he was a scoundrel.
The early sexual tension and the later developed admiration, when thrown in the mix with the family love among the group, suggests that there may be some basis for a romance to develop in the future, maybe. But they never go full on romance at any point in this movie and there’s certainly no suggestion that Star-Lord and Gamora are a couple by the end of the movie.
Unfortunately, “oogah chaka” still makes me think primarily of Ally McBeal. So not the best association.
The comment about the ship being dirty and he said that if they had a blacklight it would look like a Jackson Pollock painting.
My question is what does he know about Jackson Pollock if he was abducted at 10, but not much is explained about him so maybe he’s continued consuming Terran culture over the last 20 years.
Just adored this movie, it was such an enjoyable experience. I don’t care about any sperging or nerd complaints, I go to the cinema to be entertained and this delivered that in spades!
I went in hoping for a balance between humor and action and they threw in a balanced helping of touching to go with it. As we left the theater, my son commented on the extra at the beginning of the credits.
He said that someone needs to create a dancing Groot app. I would be so tempted to buy that.
I’ll confess to chuckling at the idea that a six year old who was last on Earth in 1988 would know A)who Jackson Pollock was and B)what a black light was.
She looked like some of the folks on the planet that he went to to fence the orb. You know, the one with the Nova guys, where he got into a fight and got arrested. I figure if he didn’t just drop her off there, she’d have been waiting in his ship when the authorities came to impound it.
