The Walking Dead; 5.02 "Strangers" (open spoilers)

With supplies running low and not knowing whether to trust the people around them, Rick leads a mission where the risk might not be worth the reward.

The gang’s back on the road, and Chad L. Coleman & Matt Jones are on Talking Dead.

That’s an interesting twist - not Carol rejoining the group, but the group rejoining Carol! Nicely done, Rick.

Ugh, a priest :smack:, hate him already

A totally unprepared priest, with possible ulterior motives?
Spike him, spike him now

Rick nailed it - he doesn’t trust the revered because he’s hiding something. His story doesn’t make sense, and as Judge Judy says, if it doesn’t make sense, it isn’t true.

Mmmm, stew.

a cold icky stew…

church lady??

It is self-stirring, though.

“YOU’LL BURN FOR THIS”, eh? So, did crazy reverend scratch that in his own church, or someone else? Who else would have scratched it? Why would they have scratched it? What horrible, horrible thing has this purported Man of God done?

Hey, it’s the guy Rick should have killed back at Terminus! And the guys who did kidnapped Beth!
Oh, that’s harsh. Well, that answers that question - Rick was right when he said they all needed to die.

It looked like people were trying to get into the church from the first scratches Carl found, then they just left him a message telling him to fuck off when he wouldn’t open the church. Also Bob looked kinda tasty.

Ah, that makes sense - he was in a safe place with lots of food, and he wouldn’t let anyone else in. That would explain the scratches and people saying he’d burn in hell for that.

You gotta think a human’s leg would be awfully tough and stringy.

I thought Bob was going to have the stereotypical zombie bite that he was hiding from e everyone else - what a twist!

I think the priest’s dilemma is that he genuinely is a timid person. When the outbreak happened, he probably panicked and locked himself inside the church, and let the people outside get killed by zombies. I actually believe that the priest is who he says he is.

The good news is that there aren’t any producers on Talking Dead, so we don’t have to discuss anything that really happened, but which we didn’t see.

Not sure what’s going on with kidnapped Beth and the car with the cross on it, but even though there is an obvious huge connection with the church and the priest, I don’t think the two are related. I don’t have anything to go off to say that. Just intuition.

The priest, if to be believed, says that he wasn’t getting out much, and had no use for the bus. So, maybe the car with the cross on it belonged to the church at one time, but was stolen?

Also, remember, Beth was kidnapped from a moratorium. Well, some place that embalmed and maybe cremated cadavers. The car could belong to the moratorium. I believe that whoever was in charge of that place is the culprit in Beth’s kidnapping. And, I think if there is any connection to the priest, it is that, since it’s a small town, the priest knows who that person is, but maybe not what they are up to.

But, man, that car with the cross on it certainly is always in a hurry.

Oo! Totally a way-out-there hypothesis, but maybe that mortician, who is adept in dealing with corpses, was one of the people the priest locked out. Knowing the priest is timid, he is assembling an army of zombies to wreck revenge upon the priest.

But, more importantly, let’s get to Gareth and Bob.

It was posited and suggested before that Bob is some bad-luck charm. When the group encountered him, he was alone, sad, and told a story about how he was previously with two other groups, but that he was the sole survivor of both groups.

Then, Gareth is talking as if they have a history together, and that it was a pleasant cosmic coincidence that they should meet again. I have a feeling that Bob is responsible for all the bad things that happened to Terminus the first time.

I still think he has the stereotypical zombie bite that he was hiding from everyone else, and the Terminus people are eating whatever the zombie toxin is right now. I bet that we will find out in the next couple episodes whoever ate him becomes a walker.

I’m not convinced that that’s not the case. His behavior only really makes sense* if he was bit and was planning to off himself outside but got conked first.
Next week when going for his other leg, they’ll find the bite.

I also noticed the guy that Tyrese supposedly killed being present and the idea that Bob knew about Terminus the whole time and used to be one of them.

  • I say that knowing full well that A LOT of their behavior doesn’t make sense. Like tonight with going in the basement to fight zombies instead of the insanely obvious “fish in a barrel” situation they were given.

Yeah, those two definitely have history. Maybe you’re right - Bob somehow was responsible for the Terminus people turning cannibal.

Oooooh! Yeah, that makes sense - he was definitely out there for some not-good reason.

And on a completely different note, Rick votes for going to Washington! Mr. Grimes Goes To Washington?

Speaking of the symbols carved into the trees, Wikipedia says that the Greek symbol for theta is either a line or a cross within a circle. However, in ancient Egyptian:

“…whereas the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet, theta, was considered the symbol of death. According to Porphyry of Tyros, the Egyptians used an X within a circle as a symbol of the soul…”

In a quick comparison of other Greek letters, the sideways “L” shape is similar to gamma, but no further information on what that might mean.

Theta is the eighth letter in the alphabet. Gamma is the third.

Some sort of rudimentary signposts for survivors in the area? A pattern that survivors are using to communicate or use for navigation - like ancient humans did on cave walls?

Morgan certainly recognized the theta symbol, though.

IIRC that was a plot line in the comic, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see it brought up in the series.

I agree on both counts. I said to my family, when there were 4 black actors in one scene, that one was going to go. This show just can’t seem to allow that.

I really didn’t get Carol’s motivation for heading out on her own in the dark. Seemed like a very emotionally driven act for the hard nosed practical realist. In reality, they just needed a way for Carol and Daryl to be out there to chase after Beth.

I did like how they showed Rick and the gang behaving in a very smart way clearing the church at the beginning. Then it all went downhill from there.

My son got a big laugh from Carl’s comment about the deep gouges in the side of the church, followed by a close up showing marks about as deep as a layer of paint.

I imagine if Bob had a bite the Terminus people would have seen it no?
