As per Ed’s instructions, I’m posting a poll to gauge the reaction to the recent replacing of the much-loved Weird Earl’s section on the main SD page with one of those horrendous Twitter feeds, an abomination to nature if ever there was one. To help get unbiased results, I shall try to keep my own prejudices out of it.
I don’t use Weird Earl’s, but it doesn’t harm me so I don’t see why it shouldn’t be kept for the people that do like it, so voting in support of keeping it.
For background, here’s the link to Ed Zotti’s explanation of why it was removed.
In the entire time I’ve been here I don’t think I clicked on Weird Earl once.
there is a front page?!
Now that you mention it : it was links to funny sites or something like that?
I voted “what’s Weird Earl?”, obviously.
I don’t do twitter, but I’ve never clicked on a Weird Earl link either. I only have a vague idea what WE is.
Italicizing mine.
That was a whoosh right?
I’d rather fill the space with a rotating cast of chocolate boobies. Tastefully done, of course.
So is that a yes or a no?
That’s me.
Anyone care to share how many clicks it got? That should shed some light on the question.
I voted no. But I’d be willing to compromise as long as chocolate boobies were part of the equation, and they were classy.
I voted YES. Why can’t there be both a WE thread and a Tweet feed?
WE is something to log onto every ten days or so and get some great laughs. Plus, it reminds us of how much more normal we are than most people. I would have never known there was various websites including services like: rapture insurance for pets, eyelashes for your car’s headlights, a guy who can design your soul on black-light rainbow velvet just from a photo, etc.
I can see how some newcomers may think something so pointless demerits this site, but what about what I just stated above? I wouldn’t have been familiar with the existence of sites like those. Is that not “fighting ignorance”?
I’m huing and crying. And tweets? Are we encouraging ignorance now?
Well, then someone with a smidgeon of web design skills needs to retool the boxes on the front page, to add one more section. Which is a bit more work than replacing the contents of one box. That doesn’t sound like much of a stumbling block, but I have my suspicions.
Don’t mistake a dislike of Twitter for a reason to keep Weird Earl’s. You can believe that the time for WE has come and gone, as I do, without loving Twitter (FTR, I hate Twitter).
I don’t personally care if WE continues, but I do think it dates the SD a bit - “hyuck, hyuck, gollee Marge, lookit what those innernets have on 'em.”
The world’s a change’n grandpa, get used to it.
Well, I’ll do a “me too”.
I have voted no, but I don’t really care- and given that is 14 years I haven’t contributed to it, I can’t see that changing.
I have looked at Weird Earl’s once or twice that I think I can remember. I don’t use Twitter, or know much about it, but if it directs people to The Dope, I think that’s a good thing.
(I voted No Opinion)
