Best of the Rest of the Top 40: 2000

Welcome to the 21st century. Will this be the decade that I make it without getting a song title wrong or accidentally including a #1 in the poll? Let’s hope so. I had to go to #44 to get 25 songs for this list.

What’s your favorite?

The year 2000 and the Backstreet Boys got my vote. NSYNC, Sonique and Macy Gray close at the heels.

Macy Gray, cross between Tina Turner and Donald Duck.

By the way you got titles all right and no #1 in sight, so don’t sweat it.

Nelly gets my vote with Third Eye Blind coming in 2nd for what I think is the 3rd time in these polls for me. Blink 182 was up there, as well.

Sonique for me, still love that tune. Macy Gray is an honourable runner-up. I wonder what she’s doing these days?

My 15-years-ago self who lives in my memory hates present day me for voting for Blink, but that trio of pop rockers who never outgrew junior high have grown on me over the years. “All the Small Things” is one of their weaker songs (it’s certainly no “Adam’s Song” or “Dammit”), but it’s definitely the most palatable song in this bunch.

Nelly for me. Country Grammar was a great song.

All the Small Things was a close second.

We’re almost to the time where I lose touch altogether with pop radio, so I won’t be around much in subsequent threads. But for 2000, I’ll vote for Nine Days.

I went with Nelly here, too. Fun song.

I voted for P!nk, but that was me reaching. What a shite year.

I had forgotten that Nine Days song. Damn you to hell for reminding me of it. Now I have to vote for “Kryptonite” to burn it out of my brain again.

“I Try” really kicks the crap out of the rest of these songs. This year is an even bigger buttocks whipper than 1998, when I picked “Tubthumping” by default. I think pop music has reached its nadir right around this time. I almost had to vote for Marc Anthony until I saw “I Try.”

For the second year in a row, I’m completely baffled by the results. Seriously, Three Doors Down is running away with this? They’re one step up from Nickelback. I’m not picking them for dead-ass last, but still it’s a pretty mediocre song.

Sorry to be That Guy but the year 2000 was still part of the 20th century. The 21st century began January 1st **2001. **

And oof. This was a terrible year for music, apparently. I cannot say I like any of these songs, so I abstain. That’s weird because for 1999 I had to choose between like eight really good songs.

Edit- Actually nah, ‘Never let you go’ is an awesome song.

I was thinking Creed, but that works, too.

I’ll go with Macy Gray’s I Try. I really liked it at the time. Liked it enough to buy the CD single actually, which was pretty rare for me. I can’t say that I still care much for that song now but it’s the best here.

I would so have voted for Montell Jordan’s Get It On Tonite because musically, that song is pure hotness. But then he had to go and ruin it all with some completely repellent lyrics.

Destiny’s Child’s Jumpin’, Jumpin is actually one of their best songs. The build-up to the chorus is pretty impressive but the chorus itself doesn’t quite live up to it.

Thong Song was fun for 5 minutes.

Voted for Kryptonite. 3 Doors Down is otherwise pretty craptacular, but I really, really like that song. It has some pleasing guitar stuff going on, and the chorus is catchy. Everything else lacks energy to me, though some songs (“I Try”, for instance) are nice enough.

Definitely Macy Gray for me.
