Mafia? Moved?

What happened to those mafia games? I used to skim them now and then, and follow along. Have the games been moved to a different forum, or has it just been getting long between games? I can’t really commit to anything like that, and haven’t for some time. I really enjoy playing resistance with friends, but I moved and have been very busy, so I’ve been sort of getting my game fix in other ways.

They’re still in The Game Room for the most part, but it’s been a long time. If you sort the forum by Number of Replies and set the time from to The Beginning, most of them will show up on the first page.

The new(ish) forum Thread Games is where that sort of thing is now.

Participation flagged, and then pretty much died off altogether. Games that used to draw thousands of posts were only drawing a few hundred. For my part, I just got discouraged; I miss hosting and playing and would do so again in a heartbeat if there seemed to be enthusiasm for it.

In theory, yes, but I don’t believe a Mafia game has been played since that forum was started. So all the old threads are still housed in The Game Room.

Mentalguy recently tried to start a game of One Night Ultimate Werewolf but it looks like it fizzled as well.

ONUW isn’t really Mafia though. Fundamentally different game.

Oh, that’s a shame. I’ve read most of the earlier threads, and I tried to follow the active at the same time. I also read the resistance threads. They were quite nice, and maybe something I could potentially have time for, but it seemed to be a bit unbalanced with play by post, if I remember correctly. Anyway, you guys have had some wild games! It’s been quite fun reading through it!

There are at least some of us* that have no idear what this “Maffia” thing is. Maybe a round of explanations here would draw more to a new round of games?

  • Where n equals at least 1.

Mafia, or Werewolf, is a party game with hidden identities. A group of players are each assigned a role secretly and the game progresses in Days and Nights. Some players are the Mafia, or Wolves, and each night they select another player to die. The rest of the players are considered Town, or Villagers. Each morning the Mafia’s kill is revealed and the now dead player’s role is revealed. Then all the players have a discussion and vote to eliminate one of their number. At Dusk, the player with the highest number of votes is killed and their role is revealed. Some of the Town players may have special roles such as being able to learn one player’s role a night or protect one player each night from dying but they’re not necessary the way the Mafia is.

The game ends when either town cannot outvote the mafia or when all the mafia are dead.

It should be emphasized here that, since the Town doesn’t know who the Mafia are, the Mafia members are included in the vote each Day. They can, if they choose, thereby attempt to steer the vote away from their fellow Mafia members. But doing so is risky, because if the genuine Townies figure out that that’s what they’re doing, then Town can figure out who all the Mafia members are, and having done that, can use their superior numbers to lynch them anyway.

Of course, this leads to lots of thinking along the lines of “but maybe that’s just what they want us to think”, otherwise known as “Wine in Front of Me” from the scene in Princess Bride.

I never did host De’endee II: The Revengening, did I? I was all talk about that, and then totally forgot.

I’d be interested if someone were to start them up again.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. They didn’t die.

We had a discussion a few months ago about choosing one site to host them on. The choices were between IdleMafia, Straight Dope, and Giraffe Boards.

We ended up picking Giraffe Boards.

There have been games constantly and I can link you right to the current one, a poker themed game dedicated to our dear late peekercpa.

It’s right here

Maybe, if there’s interest, I could run a sort of basic, beginnerish game over here? Get some new blood?

I could join, though not new. I could also help develop it and mod it. A newcomer game would be awesome.

For any newbies who might be interested: **Storyteller’s **games are awesome.

Yeah, I’m totally up for a newbie game. We need some fresh blood in the games. Anyone interested in playing? I can help make the game and mod it.

A newbie game would be good. A peanut gallery for interested observers helps as well.

If anyone else runs a game, I might be able to fit in the time.

If Storyteller runs a game, I’ll make the time.

Or Pleonast, actually, but the things I love about his games generally make them complicated and newbie-unfriendly.

I would really like to join a newbie game, and I have been considering it in the past. I’m in europe, so time zones may be a bit problematic. How long do these games usually last? I have time off until september, but I’m going to Norway and Poland. When I’m busy I would probably be able to pop in at least three times a week and take some hours here and there to catch up. Those threads grow quickly though.

I have played the resistance a lot, so I know the basic concepts. I’ve also read a lot of the threads here, so I also know how basic play goes about, along with some knowledge of power roles.

What do you guys think?
