online Mafia newbie needs some help getting started

So you Dopers have piqued my interest in this game Mafia. I looked up the rules and was instantly jazzed about trying it out. Problem is, I have nowhere near enough people around to play it in real life and my searches for online games has left me with nothing. So Mafia scum and townies alike, I beseech you; prey tell where do I find a game that’s online, free, and has openings available?

The current game at this site is very nearly over, and I’m sure a new one will kick up shortly following.

blud! joinus!joinus!joinus!

ETA: Also Facebook has Mafia games.

I wonder sometimes if us old farts like playing so much that we crowd out the new blood? We usually manage to have a few newbies in each game, and I know that there are always “Doh!” people who miss the cut-off. Maybe we could have a lottery for one of these pending games to help shake up the mix of new blood and us old crusties?

You might want to consider sponsoring a game for rookies: people who are curious but intimidated by what they perceive to be a clique of people who know what the hell they’re doing.

My user name is ‘occam’ and I signed up. I’m looking forward to playing.

Sounds like a great plan. Usually, though, we never have enough rookies to make up one whole game. It might work if there was a game hosted with only about five to eight players…

(Oh, and why have you not yet signed up at psychopath? How dare thee! :stuck_out_tongue: )

I suspect I’m not the only person too intimidated by Mafia – because as you know, I’m usually one of the first people to jump in on a good game. Maybe if you made it clear in the thread title that it was oriented towards newbies, you’d get enough to play.

(And I’ve never heard of psychopath, I’ll take a look tonight or sometime.)

Fear is a scumtell.

Obligatory:

Claiming “scum tells” is a scum tell. Vote Diomedes

twikster: You can’t seriously be intimidated by our little gaggle of loquacious mafiosi…

I think all of the games have been pretty newbie-friendly, but we could start a tradition with a werewolf-themed game each spring that specifically [del]taunts[/del] encourages newbies.

twickster, if you come to the psychopath board, I’ll change my username there to Jelaza.

Now you’re talking!

Come twickster. Resistance is futile.

I try to be nice to noobies. I was a noobie once. Hell, I still don’t know what I’m doing half the time. The key for me is to remember it’s only a game. You are accusing people of lying and they are accusing you. When you really are telling the truth, it can get frustrating, tensions sometimes run high, and unintentionally feelings can get hurt. But it’s only a game. Thick skin helps. I think it’s a lot of fun to play. And I’ve made quite a few friends along the way.

:::waves at friends:::

Maybe a Mentor Mafia game? Pair up a noob with an experienced player. Noob plays the role, but has ability to PM the mentor for advice.

That would be fun, and would allow for all sorts of second-guessing WIFOM between the mentors and mentees in any subsequent games that they both play in.

I think that’s a great idea. I’m down. crossing my fingers, hoping to get a scum noob

Dude, I am so in for that kind of game. It might be sort of interesting to have the moderator assign mentors to players after the roles have been assigned, but not make public which mentor was assigned to which player.

Either way. Fun.

You have much to learn, scumhopper.

Rule #1: Know exactly which forum you’re posting to at all times…

Rule #2 - double check the forum anyway
