online Mafia newbie needs some help getting started

Who is up next on **Idle’s ** boards to mod? And for that matter, this one? I would love to play in a Mentor Mafia game. Can you imagine the paranoia of the mentors wondering who is helping who? Definitely don’t make public until death.

Tip: Don’t go to work until AFTER you’ve posted your game-progress omnibus.

Trust me.

I have tried it a few times. The Mafia wins nearly always. I guess it’s fun if you are the Mafia. :frowning:

Well… then you’ll have fun in our games. There the Mafia’s only won once!

DBI has the next game on Idle’s boards, and I believe she is looking for a co-mod/co-designer.

The last post I saw indicated she would open up signups in the next Day or so of the Blade Runner game.

To all the newbies looking to play, come on in. It is good fun, you just have to remember it is a game. Being new can be an advantage, so don’t think you will be totally stuck.

Just be prepared for how long the games take, They do take several weeks to a game and you will have to devote some time to it.

Of course, if you are always online, it makes it much easier.

Heh.

I’ve been theorizing that a shorter game would ultimately be more interesting since it seems that games tend to lag during mid-game. Plus if we pair up people, that allows twice the number of people to play while cutting down the game time significantly. Even a 5 Day game should be expected to last at least a month.

I also like the team play idea. Perhaps a Golden Compass* Theme with mentors playing the role of those cool animals that hang around the humans?

*I’ve not actually read nor seen The Golden Compass, so I might not have a clue what I’m talking about.

I looked into the thread when the last board Mafia game was getting started, but I’m so clueless that even I backed out without saying I wanted to play. I really don’t get the game or the rules.

I would have signed up for the current Mafia game if I didn’t have to deal with the holiday travelling right in the middle of it. I’d totally be in for an all-newbie game of Mafia.* The mentored thing sounds alright, but I’d go for either. Personally, though, I’d like to see more roleplaying involved. The current game reads too much like metagaming most of the way through.
*(Granted, I guess I’m not technically a newbie, as I was in the old Mafia In Space several years back, but that crashed and burned early on, after we lynched the investigator by mistake…)

For the Mafia game I ran, I had a sign-up and then randomly chose players from the sign-up list. And allowed a whole week for signing up.

I think that sort of approach works well and wish more game mods would use it.

Although the rules for each game are unique, the basic premise is simple. For the most basic of games, a handful of players are scum (Mafia, werewolves, etc.) and can eliminate a player during the game Night. The majority of players are town, and have no knowledge (for the most part) of any other players alignments. During the game Day, the town votes as a whole to eliminate one player.

If scum become a majority, they win. If scum are eliminated, the town wins. It gets more complicated, adding town protecting and investigative roles, but that’s it in a nutshell.

I’d play, but haven’t a clue.

It’s my not-so-busy season, so I have time to learn.

If there’s a newbie game, consider me in.

I’d definitely be in for a newbie game – and if we’ve got mentors… well, I’d ask for my pal Kat, but I’m not sure I trust her…

There are a few useful sites out there with some basic examples of the rules around. **mtgman ** has a good link somewhere

Failing that, if you have any other questions, ask away. Someone will probably answer it

Mentor Mafia I may play in… since it doesn’t seem like it would require actual posting in the topic or playing the game.

Whenever I host Mafia on other boards, I tell all newcomers the same thing: The best way to learn to play is to try it out. Because I find most people I describe the rules to get confused hearing about it…whereas when they actually play it, they see how addictive it becomes.

It’s not a hard game. It’s really fun, addictive…and you can get to playing it so much that you can experience burn out from it (Look at me. Five games in a row and I’m pooped for a bit now).

Mafia according to LOLCATS:

o hai

dere be sum kittehs

most be gud kittehs

but sum be bad kittehs

gud kittehs made cheezburger

but bad kittehs eated it

(Yes, folks, you can play Mafia with Cat Macros. It’s been done.

For an explanation in regular English, try this Newbie Guide.)

True. And I was Mafia that game so get to claim that win, but I was figured out as scum so early that I had very little impact so it’s a bit of a tainted win. The Mafia would have won a second game in a row if I wasn’t such a dumbass, or if Diggit hadn’t so masterfully put the clues together (I’m still trying to decide which.)

They do take quite a while. It’s usually more months than weeks, which can lead to unexpected real-life events getting in the way of the game.

If any new players think they might have fun I encourage them to give it a try. Just remember that it is only a game. If you are town everyone will accuse you of being scum. If you are scum your fellow scum will sell you out to gain trust. It isn’t personal, and the more you can treat it as a game and not a personal attack the more fun you will have.

A game of mentor mafia would be a blast. I would be up for either being a bad mentor or a player in the game, or both if that’s the way it works out.

Oh, and for the new players, lynch Santo Rugger on Day 1. The chances are about 80% he’s scum, and if he isn’t the scum would have killed him for you already.

The original SDMB werewolf game was fairly straightforward, with no complicated roles or rules. And most of the players were newbies. The game was fairly short (heck, the entire game had fewer posts than Day 1 of the Firefly game). There were several highs and lows, and one utterly jaw dropping moment. Have a read and you’ll soon learn the rules and gameplay.

Oh, I’d be interested in being a mentor, just be aware that I may give them some rather “non-standard” ideas…
