Aw dang. Umberto Eco was one of my favorite writers. I still re-read Baudolino occasionally. I always loved his erudition and dry wit, and the depth and vividness he gave to historical fiction. He wrote the kind of stuff Dan Brown wished he could write – as Eco himself said, Dan Brown was just a character from Foucault’s Pendulum! 
EDIT: I guess that means that, now that Eco has passed on, Dan Brown will evaporate.
This is embarrassing, but I didn’t realize he was still alive. :smack:
I really enjoyed The Island of the Day Before. I’ve also read Foucault’s Pendulum and The Name of the Rose. I need to re-add him to my library list.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. Foucault’s Pendulum was probably the biggest shaper of my world-view.
I enjoyed the first half of Foucault’s Pendulum but felt it fizzled out in the second half. The Name of the Rose is one of the best books of the 20th century.
