I think we’re only counting net winnings. That was the impression I got from Varlos’ first post
I put that there only for clarity. Like when you’re evaluating bets, say you put $110 on something at -110 odds. You get back $210. The $110 original bet, plus the $100 you won. That was just my note that the number I was adding up in that instance included the $110 I was getting back. I took that gross wins number and subtracted the cost of the lost bets to generate a net, which is what counts.

FWIW, I’d just say anyone who enters the contest at any time can spend their futures dollars on their first post. Some of the bets will certainly disappear, but the odds will change as the season goes on, so it’s not like they get an advantage betting late.
