I mean, this is the kind of stuff that never shows up in even the worst horror movies because the producers know it’s too unrealistic to be believed at all… Throw a stone from the top of a tall building 100 times, and you’ll probably never hit anyone at the bottom even if you aim.
No-one to balme, really. It isn’t even totally certain that the woman was a suicide, she may have fallen. An act of fate, as it were. But the baby’s poor family! (The woman’s, too, of course - but it is these moments that show that tragedy can have many degrees, some worse than others.)
Well, I did say it was lame and unfocused. But I just had to write something.
(And as an aside - I know I’ll get flamed back for this, but these are the moments I’m glad I’m an atheist. Because if God does exist, It has one extremely badly warped sense of humor .)
A woman comes home from 2 week in rehab to find her 60 year old husband dead of a heart attack and her 6 month old child dead from, well, not being cared for.
About ten years ago, my father’s best friend was killed because a distraught individual being chased by the police decided to blow his brains out in a moving truck.
Said truck then became the Flying Fucking Dutchman and plowed into Bobby’s car. He was in his late forties, and left behind a wife and four kids.
This news story doesn’t do it any justice but it was the only one about it that I found on line. It was also reported that they had just moved into the apartment from a homeless shelter.
Noone special said that “this is the kind of stuff that never shows up in even the worst horror movies” – but something like it did show up in one of the best comedy movies, Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain.
Amélie’s mother is killed when a tourist jumps from a church.
You must be using “one of the best” in a completely new and very creative way. Anyway I remember vaguely a case where a suicide jumper landed on another man, whom was killed – the jumper survived though and was charged with murder. But what are you going to sentence a man who wants to die? Life?
The woman in Tel Aviv, if she attempted suicide, must surely carry some of the blame. She could at least have picked a spot where she would be less likely to hit somebody – not to say think of those that are forced to watch her violent death and clean up after her.
Maybe we should just make it mandatory policy to also link to a nice happy thread about someone on the SDMB getting married, graduating, etc. when creating one of these “I can’t believe how fucked up the world is” threads.
I’m afraid I can’t buy the ‘there’s no indication of suicide’ thinking, here. Unless the window blew out, or something equally unlikely, I cannot imagine how a sane and responsible person could accidentally fall out of a window on the 13th floor. In which case, it simply reinforces my feeling that suicide is an inherently selfish act.
Eve, you are a lady and a delight. Because your posts always make me smile (even when the things you describe aren’t going well), I wish you all the best.
This incident has ripped up so many people’s lives. I’d bet the paramedics who tried to save the baby are struggling with this too. I hope the family will be able to cope, and heal from this someday. Is there any word on whether or not it was a suiciide or an accident yet?
Oh…Biggirl that’s about the most heartbreaking story I’ve ever read. So sad, the husband didn’t have anyone close enough to him that would come by to talk to him and support him in such a tough time, who could have discovered the baby in time. Horribly poingant in so many ways. I can’t imagine the pain that woman must be feeling. She left to go better herself, so she and her loved ones could have a better life, and it ends up being a tragic ending instead of a joyous re-birth. I don’t want to think about the poor little one and the pain they felt as they died, it’s just too much.
