Misogynistic rock lyrics

Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl,
Than to be with another man

—Beatles, “Run for Your Life”*

Under my thumb’s the girl who once had me down
—Stones, “Under My Thumb”

God created Man from dust, with a soul inside his mould
And God created Womankind, the vessel of Satan’s hold
—Genesis, “The Serpent”

Lots of people talkin’, few of them know
Soul of a woman was created below

—Led Zeppelin, “Dazed and Confused”

*(To John Lennon’s credit, he made amends for this crap near the end of his life, with his great song “Woman.”)

Doesn’t misogyny refer to a generalized hatred of all woman-kind? I think the first two selections are a little too specific. I think it’s possible to hate a particular woman without being misogynistic.

And the Beatles tune isn’t even hatred. It’s advocating violence, sure, but it’s about jealousy, not hatred.

Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl,
Than to be with another man

— Elvis Presley, “Baby Let’s Play House” (words and music by Arthur Gunter)

The Beatles lyric is –

Run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end-DAH, little girl

Yes, it’s violent, anti-social, and all kinds of bad things, but I wouldn’t call it misogynistic. It may exemplify all kinds of negative traits, but I don’t think it shows a generalized hatred of women. Indeed, it’s a specific sentiment, not generalized. It exemplifies jealousy, not hatred, and it’s not about women in general.

Almost the entirety of sextypething by STP. Oddly enough, it’s obvious that it’s so over the top that the composer doesn’t actually mean it but is rather inhabiting a character, which is common in STP songs, yet Weiland was accused of violence against women.

Every single song by The Mentors. I win.

I remember hearing Weiland defend the song when it first came out. Now, I have no problem at all with singing a song in character, but this probably should have been thought out a little better.

“Hi, I’m Scott Weiland. I don’t want people to think of me as misogynistic. Therefore, we will release the most misogynistic song on our album as our debut single”. :smack:
