I know that explaining a joke takes away some of its charm, but I see this one everywhere. Every time someone uses it, someone thinks it’s funny enough to reply with a “lol!” post…
so tell me. what’s so funny?

It started in this thread. An amusing massively multiple simulpost became an eduring SDMB in-joke.
It’s so unfair that the thread turns up on your search but not mine.
Well, I had to click back through 7 pages of results on “Rio Duran Duran” before I found it…
thanks I didn’t realize it was a SDMB-exclusive joke. that explains why google doesn’t have any explanation :smack:
Accidential duplicate posts have a way of creating SDMB cliches. See also “1920s-style death rays” and “20 minutes in the Marianas Trench.”
Rio by Duran Duran doesn’t have any accidental double posts. Just too many Dopers posting the same answer.
A perfect example of this phenomenon can be found in twickster’s recent thread M __ N __ R __ H. It may not have occurred to everyone posting there, but I had the distinct impression that everybody wanted in on the next instance of an SDMB in-joke. It was palpable to me.
The tendency these days for threads to get locked before any serious mischief can materialize, makes the likelihood of another bandwagon any time soon, pretty low.
But be on your guard: maybe you can be in on the next one, or it might just happen in a thread you start. Just try not to be too obvious in your efforts to “push it.” These things are funniest when they “just happen.”
Really? I was totally oblivious to that, if it was there. For me, the OP at least was just me doing my usual M&P “here’s a cool bit of wordplay that just occurred to me” thing.
Why doesn’t Pride of the Peaches have post numbers listed? Even guests do.
Actually, I’m pretty sure it started in this thread.
Neither does “Marianas Trench”- just the same sentence typed twice in the same post. I guess I should have said repetition often leads to SDMB cliches.
Ca-a-a-ause he’s a s-o-o-o-ong from the sixties! Actually, I have no idea.
As for attempts to make a new SDMB catchphrase, I’ve always been disappointed that “steamin’ cup of fido jizz” never caught on.
That’s the same thread I linked to…
Actually, I believe you’re both mistaken. This thread is the one in question.
:smack:
Whoosh…
I’m surprised more people don’t use “God’s Throbbing Prostate” from the classic “Telemarketer speaks - I respond” thread.
I think the thread you are looking for is “Rio” by Duran Duran.
I’m surprised nobody was able to explain that yet after all these posts.
