007 Movies

I’ve watched all 20 James Bond movies from “Dr. No” to “Die another day” and I must say it’s strange. In “Dr. No” it used to irritate the hell out of me how Sean Connery as Bond was in a ventilation shaft that for some reason got flushed by water. In “Die another day”, we have the invisible car. For some reason these two items irritate the hell out of me. In “Dr. No””, I could never quite grasp why water would ever flow through a vent shaft. And when he finally gets out of the shaft, there is no trace that the water ever came out of that particular vent in that room.
Since Dr. No, I realize that there is still a lot of incredible stuff that seriously would be considered stretching by any means in the real world, but at least it was somewhat credible. One thing I have always liked has been the various spy equipment that Bond gets from Q in every movie. It is always a bit on the edge of technology of the time each movie was made, but all the items were always still possible for the time. But in “Die another day”, an invisible car??? I’m back to the disappointment I felt in Dr. No.
Now please keep in mind that I realize it’s Hollywood, or rather Pinewood, but the thing I always liked about the JB movies is how it’s set in the current world. Bond having survived since 1962 without aging is obviously unreal. And not to mention the fact that for a man who has been shot at so many times, he is incredibly lucky to always survive.
I am talking about how he has the very latest POSSIBLE technology available, even when it’s a wee bit more advanced than we are used to. I mean I was a bit on the disappointed side with “Moonracker” but most of the technology to accomplish the stuff in the movie was frankly there. But an invisible car???
I am disappointed.

All though an opinion, I have realized this threadshould have perhaps been posted in Cafe Society.
Moderator, please help.

Perhaps you should read the books; I don’t recall how well it’s stated in the movie, but it follows the book fairly closely, and the book makes it clear that there IS no ventilation shaft – the whole things is like a hamster cage, designed to stress-test prisoners before they get offed. Dr. No fancied himself a scientist, and was experimenting on Bond.

What nametag said…

And…as for the invisible car…that irritated me too. Q really needed to explain that one a little better.

IIRC, Q explained it fine, it was the SFX that let us down. The idea was that the car would have cameras that would be constantly taking a picture of the environment, then would project those pictures onto its skin. This would result in a really cool effect where the car would be almost invisible from a certain angle, but not quite, and quite visible (and neat looking) from other angles.

I was quite looking forward to seeing how it looked, but no, they just had to go for boring old invisibility instead.
