what did you think of DIE ANOTHER DAY

I fell they kind of dropped the ball. I mean there was some interesting elements in the stories

But there were just to many flaws and the director well let me just I don’t want him anywhere near an other Bond movie

But in fairness I felt the script and once again I fell that Brosnan dose another great job with Bond (and is second only to Conery himself). But really have to make clear that I thought the Mr. Blond stole the movie (He even whore the black Reservoir Dogs suit) and that by the end I really wanted to see Kill Bill just for him.

To some it up I think that Die Another Day and License to Kill are at the opposite end of the spectrum of Bond movies. Both movies lack a balance between a hard-boiled spy film a clever adventure (I fell Brosnan’s other Bond movies did have this balance) witch make this franchise so entertaining.

I’ve only seen it once so far (second viewing tomorrow), but basically, it was pretty good.

Pluses:

  • I think they are trying hard to break the cliches. The 14 month imprisonment is a good departure.
  • Liked the fact that he smoked several cigars. Liked it even more since it got protested!
  • Glad that Cleese was called “Q”, not “R” like I was afraid he would be.
  • It had Michael Madsen in it.
  • Lots of good in-jokes for die-hard fans (abundantly documented in other threads on this board)

Minuses:

  • Brosnan will never be Connery, and will never be Dalton. (Plus within a minus: at least he isn’t Moore!)
  • They still just WILL NOT make it a gritty, realistic spy flick! Don’t they think that will sell? Bastards!!!
  • Michael Madsen was totally wasted in it.

You must suspend reality to enjoy it. 14 months tortured in prison should have produced a more emaciated Bond. 14 months to produce that big laser??? I just enjoyed it for the entertainment. Moved quickly. Was fun. Loved the surfing scene and car battle.

Oh come on, it’s a Bond movie, the laws of time and space are very flexible.

I thought it was woefully inept. Truly awful digital effects (especially the second surfing sequence) and an invisible car? Please, I thought this was supposed to be a spy movie, not a SF movie.

I agree with sirtonyh: The movie was bordering on Sci Fi in many respects (rewriting DNA, an invisible car…). I also couldn’t believe the carelessness of showing Ferrari’s (or whatever super-sports cars they were supposed to be) being thrown out the back of a cargo plane in flight and a short while later they are shown on the ground in PERFECT condition except for being shown sticking staight up in the mud.

In spite of these and many more issues, I did enjoy the movie. It was a fun movie.

One last thing: Who would be driving around in a convertible in Iceland on a glacier without apparently even having a top to put up?

I thought it was awful, absolutely awful. With $60 million in product endorsements you’d think they could have afforded some decent special effects, or at least a script with more than one good line.

Brosnan was horrible, Berry was horrible and Madonna was Madonna, that pretty much sums up the whole film.

Actually I did like the burning lady effect in the intro credits, but other than that it was the worst Bond movie ever.

I like Pierce Brosnan as Bond, I don’t really care about Halle Berry, she is eye-candy/window dressing.

Madonna Sucked both the Theme Song and the Acting.

I hated the speed up/close up shots.

I liked the car, Aston Martin - Vanquish, I want that car.

I liked the homage to the other Bond movies.

It is escapism, I have spent money on worse things than this movie, maybe not the best but OK.

I like Brosnan as bond, too. I just thought he was godawful in this installment. I also know it’s escapism, I like escapism, I don’t even have any complaints about the overrall plot - my problem is entirely with the exectution. The dialogue was painful and the FX sequences were laughable.

I just wanted to say JESUS CHRIST, Lear’s_fool learn how to write.
That’s all for now. Carry on.

I liked it. It had everything I look for in a Bond flick: an absurd super villain lair complete with spy cutting lasers and plenty of nondescript guards who can be knocked unconscious if you look at them funny, more witty bondism than you can shake a stick at, exotic locales, extremely hot women beating the crap out of each other, and of course a dope car and cool gadgetry. It was funny, clever, and action packed, definitely my favorite of the Brosnan Bond films.

I don’t know what you people who didn’t like the effects are talking about, they were terrific. And BTW, the invisible car idea was ripped from the headlines.

I thought Halle Berry’s dialogue was horrible. I don’t think the writers could decide whether they wanted her to be Bond’s equal or the sassy comic relief. Pretty standard as Bond movies go, nothing new, but hey, there are worse ways to spend $6 and two hours. Oh well, back to waiting for “The Two Towers.”

No they weren’t. The most glaring example was the surfing down the melting glacier scene - it was one giant bluescreen sequence. You could tell that Pierce was just standing there holding onto some ropes as they blew wind into his face. Ugh.

I did like John Cleese as Q though.

I thought it mid-range Bond, not as ludicrous or poorly-acted as Moonraker, but not as great as Goldfinger. I’d put it about equal to You Only Live Twice or Thunderball.

FX don’t have to be perfect for me to enjoy them. I could always tell that King Kong or Gwangi were small puppets, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying their flicks. Yeah, I could tell that Bond’s escape from the glacier was mostly cgi, but I liked it nevertheless. You could tell it was cgi when the car vanished or when Bond drove it and whenever it reappeared, but I enjoyed the scenes anyway.

I guess I’m just easy to please as far as FX go. If the story is okay, and the FX aren’t too shoddy, I’ll enjoy it.

How did y’all like Moneypenny’s final scene? I applauded.

Even for Bond movies, this film got a little far-fetched.

Hey, I said even for Bond movies - I know they aren’t supposed to be realistic! The invisible car I could just about take, but the surfing down the glacier sequence was just ludicrous!

A lot more could have been made of Michael Madsen, but then I like him as an actor.

As a switch-off-the-brain-and-enjoy movie, it was pretty good!

Bond is a whore. Jeez, I am no avid Bond fan, but come on, the guy slept with women more than he did his job. I thought it was absolutely absurd. But the car was nice.

Aw, cmon, he only slept with two. That’s not a lot!

BTW, Tim R. Mortiss, Cleese became Q because the original Q died - basically, he got promoted (at least, that’s how I understood it). If Desmond Llewellyn were still alive and playing Q, Cleese would be R, his protoge’.

Not only did he sleep with just two women… It was the only two women in over 14 months. I think THAT was probably the worst torture he ever went through.

Easily the weakest of the Brosnan Bonds.

Halle Berry’s character was a bore. Exactly like James, only an American female. Ho-hum. Let Bond be Bond, and don’t try to wow us with how progressive the latest female second bananna is. No, they don’t have to be droolling bimbos, but having them as coolly competent as 007 detracts from our hero.

While we’re on that, the “Bond’s rampant womanizing gets him in trouble when he unwittingly sleeps with the enemy” plot was done in the last movie. And Madonna’s cameo was just distracting.

And yeah, the SFX were a cut below previous expectations. And who the hell told the director to use all the slow motion?

On the other hand, he’s back in an Aston Martin. And the “dueling supercars” scene was cool.

The villains were interesting (although you’d think that they’d remove the diamonds before starting the gene therapy, and the electric gauntlets were just dumb) and they used one of my pet issues (diamonds).

I give it 2 and 1/2 stars out of four.

By the way, was this the first time a real world power was so heavily involved by their own fault? Yeah, there’s been stuff with the USSR or China working through (or being manipulated by) supervillain proxies, but this involved a coup and attempted invasion by North Korea.

It just seemed to me that every ten minutes he was in bed with one girl, or watching another undress. I kept thinking to myself, “When does he blow up stuff?”
