1 month in Fiji - what would you do?

Me and my boyfirend will be spending a month in Fiji next February. Has anyone got any recommendations about things to do/see apart from just chilling out on the beach of course?

Where in Fiji are you going?

The main island, Viti Levu, is ok, but try and get out to some of the smaller islands. There are lots of little ferries servicing lots of little islands.

We spent some time on Taveuni. Fantastic diving on its west side! Very nice national park on the north end of the island with some stunning waterfalls and lagoons (and along the path to the top waterfall are some bright blue land crabs with lotsa attitude!). The international date line also runs through Taveuni (makes for a fun picture: Look! I’m in tomorrow… now I’m in today, etc.)

Haven’t been there, but I’ve heard the NW islands (the Yasawa group) have some pretty stunning beaches and decent surfing. I think that’s also where they filmed one of the ‘Blue Lagoon’ movies.

One of the interesting things about Fiji is that the two main cities, Nadi and Suva, have very sizeable Indian populations (originally brought over by the British to show the locals how to run sugar cane plantations). It almost feels like you’re in India sometimes as quite as most of the women are wearing saris and the latest balliwood films are on the marquee of the local theater.

Lets see… try the kava. Tastes like dirty dishwater, but gives a pleasant buzz. Not much of an issue in the more touristy spots, but if you get to some of the more remote areas, be certain to be respectful and ask permission of the local ‘chief’ before using the beach or walking around their ‘village’ (sometimes just 10-15 small houses/huts).

I’ll post more if I remember other items…
