Holy smokes. I know it’s unlikely to be an actual sequel to Cloverfield but Bad Robot releasing a film with that name is something designed to catch my attention.
Previous thread. And why do you think it’s not a sequel? I mean, the trailer clearly segues from just showing ‘Cloverfield’ to adding the ‘10’ and ‘Lane’.
Personally, I’m stoked, and really impressed they kept this under wraps for so long—I wish that happened with more movies!
I was surprised how much I liked Cloverfield. I’m looking forward to this.
looks pretty good…
John Goodman? I’ll watch it.
I wouldn’t mind seeing what happened to Snookums after he shrugged off that bomb blast.
And John Goodman as some kind of crazed survivalist and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who always seems to be in great genre stuff) is in it too. Definitely excited.
Well, every source that says anything about the movie says it’s a different story, and that the use of the word “Cloverfield” is both a marketing gimmick and, again, a tribute to where the studio is physically located.
First one didn’t go over well the audience. If they don’t get good early reviews this one will flop. Hint to movie makers: We want to see monsters in monster movies. Cover your face and scream at the unseen horror has been done to death.
Umm…
Rotten Tomatoes: 77%
IMDB User Rating: 7.1
Box Office: $80 million (+90 million foreign) on a $25 million budget
Those numbers are all insanely high. The “audience” loved Cloverfield and a sequel will probably do pretty good.
That’d be really disingenuous marketing, though; I’ll wait till word is out. Abrams apparently called it a ‘blood relative’ to Cloverfield; together with the tagline ‘monsters come in many forms’ that probably means it’s indeed not a straight sequel. I hope it’ll be set in the same universe at least, or have some connection beyond some sort of ‘feel’ or ‘mood’ or whatever you want to call these things.
Honestly, though, when I read ‘Cloverfield’ I think ‘giant monster’, so I’ll be disappointed at least if there’ll be none in this one.
Oh my god, it’s happening! I loved Cloverfield, but gave up hope we’d ever see the sequel, or spin-off, or whatever this is
Well, they are good numbers. The gross isn’t that incredible, but the profits were good from the obvious savings on the budget. I think the appeal comes from within that genre and it could have had a broader audience. But it’s just my opinion, if it has an audience than more power to them.
I recall the viral marketing campaign for Cloverfield included a special popular smoothie type drink whose main ingredient was something they found recently on the ocean floor. The implication I picked up was that harvesting this disturbed Snookums enough that he attacked Manhattan.
I can accept a sequel where folks who consumed too much of this begin to turn into Deep Ones,
No sign of shaky cam, I’m in!

If the trailer’s anything to go by, this may be a one of the instances where the sequel is better. I love daikaiju-style monsters, so I’m eagerly awaiting this one.
It’s also worth mentioning that it sold another $30M in DVDs, and made who knows how much on demand. This series has at least a couple of equel in it, at least it does if they don’t fuck it up.
I loved the Cloverfield media campaign. I probably had more fun during that than the movie. The movie made me sick and I never get motion sickness. We probably sat too close to the screen though. And while I liked it, it was a huge letdown compared to the year of buildup.
JJ’s gotten better as a producer and director since then. And he’s totally someone who would completely put the Cloverfield thing in and never ever confirm that this is a monster movie or set in the aftermath of the original Cloverfield. Or it’ll just be ghosts or something and won’t have any relation except the name. I’m excited (and only have to wait 2 months! woohoo!)
We just watched Cloverfield (my wife had never seen it!). Really very impressive on that budget, and I’d forgotten it was TJ Miller’s movie debut.
I really enjoyed Cloverfield and the whole media campaign they did for it–some of the “fake” websites are still up.
The new trailer has me cautiously optimistic, but I want to see some monsters.
