100 levels of consciousness?

I was reading through one of the discussions on Great Debates and came across a reference that (some) anesthesiologists believe there are 100 levels of consciousness. A quick search of the web only turned up one reference, and that referred to the issue only peripherally. Does anyone know what the basis of this claim is, and where I can find more references to satisfy my curiosity? If there are this many levels of consciousness, how are they described? Is there any basis in fact for this belief?

I did search through the archives in case this question has been adressed specifically, or in passing, so I hope I’m not going over old territory.

Thanks!

No cite yet: but if it’s the reference I think (“Granpa was a carpenter” … etc) it’s from a speech reported in a mystical publication, so I’m not sure why you should believe it. 100 is far too neat a figure. There are, however, a number of surgical assessment schemes, such as the Glasgow Coma Scale, that produce a number describing level of consciouness. Perhaps this is where the idea came from.
