See it here. Preserved in amber. A foot, a toe and part of the tail. And scientists can even see its toe pads and the little microscopic hairs that allow it to stick to walls. (Not that there were any walls back in its day.)
Hope this was not posted before. Since the Search function does not work, I can’t check.
No, not lizards, honest to goodnes giant geckos, like this or this one. Those lightbulbs must be about 15cm tall, so I eyeball at least 30cm for the gecko, the one on the wall was even bigger.
I even got a video of the geckzilla feasting on some bugs that showed up that night… “some bugs” fiddlesticks, it was a veritable swarm of biblical proportions, a cloud of the things swept past the resort, it must have been the annual spawning or who knows what, but the things where making the air thick. No wonder those geckos get that big there!
By the way, if you ever get the chance or whimsy to go to Koh Kood, I highly recommend that resort (The Koh Kood Resort), it’s on a small isolated bay, lovely scenery and tranquility.
Yes, geckos are very cool, I keep telling that to my girlfriend but she freaks out on sight of one.
Besides I maintain that the gecko population of Bangkok is the only standing defense against Cockroach Paradise.
Next time you go to Koh Chang… keep going and land on Koh Kood instead, it’s so much better. You may also try the smaller islands in between, Koh Mak is very tranquil and the Mu Koh Rang archipelago is very beautiful for a day trip visit.
I love geckos, or jingjok, but the wife is meh about them.
Supposedly, if you hear one chirping as you are about to leave, something bad will happen to you while you’re out, and so you should change your plans and stay home. There was a great TV commercial once with this couple who could never leave their home, because whenever they started to, a gecko would chirp at them, saying: “Hi! So, where you folks off to?”
