100 People Screwing Up America: Know Any Of Them?

That would explain why Bias came out in 2001… oh wait. I guess I believe this guy about as far as I can throw him.

Say what you will about Jimmy Carter- I have no idea how he’s making America more selfish, vulgar or cynical.

Dunno who he is.

Still dunno who he is but at least now what he is.

It is not like I could give them a call and meet for a beer, but I have shook hands/or been introduced to: Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, Howard Dean and Barbra Streisand.

And I am 100% sure none of them would ever remember meeting me.

[Moderator Underoos On]Try to remember that this is a poll, not a political discussion.

Pardon the oblivious moment, and I’d never even heard of the book before this thread… but why are some of the names non-names?

Guy Valella #94. OK, I don’t know him personally, but he was a NY state senator. MY SO knows him, when his identity was stolen Guy Valella (or Guy Valellas office) helped him get everything straightened out with all the differnt New York City agencies. I guess he’s on the list for getting arrested for taking bribes or some similar politician thing.

You can click on the names of the people on the list and it gives background info. I guess Barbara Kingsolver is on the list because she wrote about the wives of miners in Arizona in 1983.

I was in the second or so row for a speech by #4 Jesse Jackson, and I shook his hand.

I bought a book from #15 Ted Rall at the Small Press Expo in 2004. We chatted a bit, but he wouldn’t remember me.

I’m a semi-regular reader of #52 Markos Moulitsas’s website. I don’t think that should count.

#74 Katha Pollitt and I were both regulars of Slate’s long-departed NewsQuiz feature.

About a month ago my wife spotted the question-mark car driven by #99 Matthew Lesko as we were tooling aorund Bethesda, but I missed it.

How many people imediately went back to the list to see who 85 was?

Oh, just me?

Anyway, then I thought back and I have a #85 in my past too.

I’ve met Noam Chomsky, Lee Bollinger, and Harry Belafonte (they certainly wouldn’t say they know me, though!). All of the meetings were in work situations, which strikes me as funny now that I see all three names together.

I also know three of the 101 Most Dangerous Professors, or whatever it is that David Horowitz is calling them. I know several more people who are seething because they didn’t make that list.

Man, I’m not remembering any of these until other people post them. I met her the same way I met the other people I’ve mentioned. I sent her a few of my clips and she complimented my writing.
