100 year Anniversary of Boston Red Sox World Series Win

Today is the century anniversary of the Red Sox winning the World Series. They won in 1916 and 1918, but then not again until 2004, 86 years later .

I don’t normally follow sports, but a.) I live in Boston and b.) I just attended my first Sox game a couple of weeks ago.

Babe Ruth was on the team, but, amazingly, did not pitch in the five games against Philadelphia, and only pinch-hit once. He was apparently much more of a force in the 1916 and 1918 Series, so his departure in 1919 (along with a trade of three other power players, also to the Yankees, in 1918) really could be regarded as the cause of “The Curse of the Bambino” that caused that 86 year drought.

interesting… the Cubs are a similar story… they are still in the playoffs this year:

The Cubs won back-to-back World Series championships in 1907 and 1908, becoming the first Major League club to play in three consecutive Fall Classics, and the first to win it twice. The club has appeared in seven World Series following their 1908 title, most recently in 1945.

Amusing trivia fact: The Cubs’ last World Series win is now closer in time to the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) than it is to the present day.

Or to bring it a bit closer to home, it’s closer to the Louisiana Purchase than the present.
