1000 Orangutans die in fires, & at hands of locals

How sad.

Their homes are being destroyed by slash and burn agriculture, and when they raid local farms they’re killed for damaging crops. Now a slash and burn fire out of control is driving them out, where they’re met by locals wielding machetes.

Talk about man’s inhumanity to his cousins.

Makes me feel like going totally librarian-poo.

When asked about it, one of the surviving orangutans commented, “Ook”*
(*Did you see a rainforest around here a moment ago?)

And yet every time an environmentalist suggests that wide scale birth control be taught and used to control human population growth, we are decried as nut jobs and fascists. Indonesia population growth is completely off scale. They need to institute population growth measures more than most countries. It would be best if the world population levels peaked soon and began a slight decline. As usually we have the big 3 related religions in the way of this sensible process. Why do so many people have to seize upon “be fruitful and multiply” instead of so many other teachings out of the Torah, Bible and Koran.
Short term agriculture of slash and burn, long term destruction of rare and unknown species and vegetation and the continuing destruction of rain forest and yet more CO[sub]2[/sub] dumped into the atmosphere. It is driving me crazy.

Bolding mine. I’d like a cite for Jews breeding out of control. Thanks.

You have never noticed how large Orthodox families are?
But you are right, it is overwhelmingly Christians and Muslims.
Mainly, I believe the words originated in the Torah and were incorporated into the Bible and Koran teachings. I have little problem with the Jews as a group. I am a little Jewish and my wife is Jewish. On the other hand, I was born Catholic and I have a huge problem with the tenets of this religion.

Jim

It’s about the apes, people! The apes!

Sorry, guy. We are cool and it’s just me being grumpy after another viewing for a friend’s mother. Seems like the folks I care most about are shrinking, but it’s personal perspective.

I’ll agree that many orthodox families are large, even over large. But I’ll argue that Jews as a percentage of overall population are still shrinking. Glad to have a guy like you as a little part if the tribe.

Take your stinking hands off me, you damned dirty human!
At least that is what the “ook” should translate too. I apologize. I get pissed at the continual rape of the planet and those who do not care about changing the way things are.

brownie55: Quite all right, I was ranting in raving in my post.

Sorry for the double. You are right, but if we kill off all the humans the apes will be free to take over.

I am reminded of the touching stories and photographs that Birute Galdikas and her then husband Ron Brindamour published in National Geographic about the orangutans. The orangs always seemed the serenest of the great apes. They don’t go to war like the chimps. I never could get worked up over gorillas; they always struck me as more like condors. Gorillas were too specialized for their environment, and could never adapt, always chasing the curve.

Indonesia has been trying to control their birth rate for quite a while. When I was first there in 1980, there were billboards everywhere that said “DUA CUKUP!”. (Two is enough!)

From Here:

Whoops, forgot to clarify: this was not to say that Jews actually ARE “breeding out of control”, just that they are kinda sorta supposed to “be fruitful and multiply”. According to scripture, anyway.

I hope they suceed, but in the meantime:
Following in Red from https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/id.html#People
Population is 245,452,739 (July 2006 est.) in only 1,826,440 sq km
Median age: total: 26.8 years
male: 26.4 years
female: 27.3 years (2006 est.)
It would appear it is not working very well yet.
Birth rate: 20.34 births/1,000 population (2006 est.)
Death rate: 6.25 deaths/1,000 population (2006 est.) Does this look like they are doing a good job? Might be time for more than slogans!
My religion Kicker: Religions: Muslim 88%, Protestant 5%, Roman Catholic 3%, Hindu 2%, Buddhist 1%, other 1% (1998)

Compare these numbers to the US or other western countries. https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html

Huh boy. Now Jim’s going all badchad on us. It’s amazing how quickly you can drag a thread around to the evils of religion if you really want to.

Jesus H. Christ! How fucking awful… :frowning:

But what does the primate say about killing orangs?

What a coinkydink. I made almost this same rant over in the thread about declining fisheries. Part of the problem is also that even enviornmentalists have been soft-pedaling the population issue for years, for fear of offending to someone. Back during the first Earth Day that wasn’t true; population was front-and-center.

America’s population growth is also out of control, largely fueled by immigration. What worries me there is that this indirectly encourages further population growth in the source countries.

It is the pit, you explain the population explosion on those islands as anything but a religious problem? Religion and greatly increased health care has led to a huge population growth that has led to unbelievable pressure on the natural resources of the island. The human incursion on nature on that particular piece of soil is worst than anything Locust can do. The people have to eat, so slaughters like this occur. The only solution is government stepping in to hold down the birth rate and that cannot occur in a society that is overwhelming following the Koran.

Please enjoy picking the holes in my logic. I welcome the education and the debate. Is it really fair to compare me to badchad? Could we at least reduce that to a Psuedo? I am far from suggesting all religions are evil. However, the ones that push the “Be fruitful and multiply” phrase are reckless and harmful to the planet and especially to the ecology of the planet.

Jim

At the very least, they should give the orangs machetes and let them defend themselves.

Actually, I was perversely pleased to hear that there were still 1000 orangs alive in the wild.

Judaism doesn’t prohibit birth control or require couples to have a lot of children.

The Talmud actually discusses which forms of birth control are and aren’t acceptable, and how many children a couple are required to have. There are two opinions in the Talmud- one says that two sons is the minimum, one says that a son and a daughter is the minimum. Some Jews (generally Orthodox) do have more children than that, but Judaism doesn’t require them to do so.

I should also point out that not all varieties of Christianity or Islam forbid birth control, either. Most mainline Protestant denominations allow it, and there is at least one denomination of Islam that does. I think it’s deplorable that some religious authorities are against birth control, but remember that not all of them are.

No, you’re being more of a Der Trihs in this instance. As the OP says; it’s about the apes. The fricking apes, okay? Nothing in any religious text says “burn the orange apes and machete them if they try to escape”, so give it a rest. This is a problem of economic expansion in under-regulated areas, not … whatever the hell you want it to be about religion. Start a religion thread if you want to, no-one’s stopping you.

It’s about the apes. The awesome, floppy-faced, tragically declining apes. Ook.
