11bravo dopers , got a question

Specifically in the movie war of the worlds with Tom Cruise, at the end of the movie just outside boston , one of the tri-pods is engaged by the guard with some sort of a rocket launcher.

Its shoulder fired , bigger than a M-72 but not as squat as the dragon anti tank launcher

Any Idea what it was.

This normally should have gone to Cafe , but since I am asking about a particular weapon in the movie , I put it here.

Was it a Javelin?

Anyone have a screen shot from the film?

I think we have a winner .

FWIW, the M136 and M141 have replaced the M72 as the 11B’s issued rocket launcher.
The Dragon isn’t currently used either, but I think some Guard units may have them still in inventory or something. Javelin is the shit. The Dragon is wire guided, so can’t even compete with the Javelin. Even the TOW is going wireless, otherwise it would have been replaced as well.

Is the TOW missile going to be RF guided or IF or microwave. I thought one of the reasons that it went wire guided was possible jamming of the freq it would use.

Any word on the status of that? Last I heard ITAS was a hell of a system and will be in use a long time. I think the Javelin works for most of our fire-and-forget needs. I’ve heard rumors about a “fire and forget” TOW for a long time, but nothing concrete.

And besides, what would they call it? The ‘W’ in TOW stands for ‘wire-guided’.

I dont think they would have to change it from TOW

Tube launched Optically something Wireless guided

It’s a radio link. I am not sure about jamming, but I bet it could easily use the same crypto as our other radio communication systems. I dunno, I’m not a como guy.

The ITAS is bad-ass. Good thing about the wireless TOW version is that the wireless system is integrated into the missle and the tube. So it is used in existing launch platforms. The ITAS communicates with the wireless version just like the wired version. It’s the missle tube delivering the commands to the missle that is changed. So no changes to the current ITAS is needed. Same goes for the launch systems already integrated into the Bradley IFVs and Stryker ATGMs.

It still isnt “fire and forget” like the Javelin though. The missle is still optically tracked and the user must keep his cross hairs on the target until impact.

As far as status… I have not seen any personally. I hear they are out there though. So I believe the Army has already begun purchasing them. Or maybe just bought enough for evaluation. Not sure.

Its called “TOW AERO”.
