I wanted to kick myself this morning for almost completely forgetting it! But at any rate, just thought I’d share that today - November 30th, 2014 - marks 12 whole years since I’ve had a drink, a smoke, a toke, a snort or a dose (that wasn’t doctor prescribed.)
And in answer to your question Living Well, yes even after 12 years I do still get the craving to drink or smoke pot. Not so much other substances. Cigarette smoke actually does repulse me now.
As to how I deal with them, I know from experience that cravings do pass if you just wait them out. Hokey as it sounds, I just tell myself “I will wait 30 minutes and if I still have a craving, I’ll do something about it”, knowing well enough that after 30 minutes I won’t have that craving. It’s worked so far.
My co-worker was showing around a chip she got at AA (I suppose). She stopped drinking last week, a month or so after the team took the boss out for “a drink” on bosses day and she proceeded to down about 6-8 mixed drinks in an hour and a half and getting drunk in front of him. She admitted during the drinks that she had an addictive personality (was way into gambling when first divorced, to the point of neglecting her children).
Is there anything I should do to help or encourage her? We don’t hang out together and I don’t drink at all.
Probably not, if you are not friends, although it’s sometimes helpful to have another nondrinker hang out with at parties. If she is really doing AA, she should be getting a sponsor and a bunch of phone numbers of people to call.
