$16k for "Motorcycle Mechanics Institute" = legit???

A friend is considering attending the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute of Orlando, Florida for I think 2 years. The tuition is $16,000.

Is this place legit? Numerous web sites refer to them, including motorcycle dealers that say their mechanics are trained there, so I guess it is.

But it sounds like alot of money to learn to fix bikes. Anybody out there know any favorable or unfavorable stories?

There is a court case entitled “United States vs. Motorcycle Mechanics Institute”, but I have not found any web site where I can read the case without belonging to some organization first. Anyone know of one?

$ 16,000 is not that expensive for two years of tuition at an accredited technical school. Training technical personnel is often quite expensive.

Here is their web site. They’ve apparently been around for quite awhile.

U.S. v. MMI was a discrimination case under the Americans with Disabilities act. Blind guy.

I attended the first year of a 2 year automotive repair course in the early 1980’s. It cost a little over $5000, thanks to VA benefits, it only cost me about $250 out of pocket, the VA paid the rest. I would the same course costs a whole lot more today.

I would GUESS the same course costs a whole lot more today.

I just can’t resist this: “Great mechanic, but murder when it comes to road-testing.”

Two years? I graduated from AMI in fifteen weeks and got to live in Daytona! Honestly, I don’t think there’s enough to learn about motorcycles to to fill a full-time two year program. Is there a particular reason your friend wants to go to MMI?

The $16K figure probably isn’t too far off for a private two year class, but I have to wonder how much the money will buy. Admittedly it was a decade ago and during a recession, but my income as a motorcycle mechanic topped out at just under $18K, and I was making at least as much as the other mechanics around here (there was one guy who was revered because he made $24K in one year.)
