1883 Yellowstone Prequel

Apparently impoverished immigrants couldn’t afford to ship their possessions by rail.

But, mom’s cherished piano and sideboard eventually got tossed off the wagon anyway. I remember a famous picture of the Oregon Trail with discarded furniture on the ground. There were also a lot of graves along that trail.

It would have been smarter to book passenger rail tickets and replace their stuff in Oregon. People are too sentimental.

They were looking for freedom, freedom was not to be found in NY City back then, at least not for poor uneducated immigrants. They knew they would just be trading one type of oppression for another if they went that route. They were after land ownership, something that had never been available to them before. And land was available to them if they made a bold move.

When you are poor and looking to break out of poverty you watch your expenses very closely. The people who took the wagon trains didn’t realize how hard the trip could be because no one in their circle had actually experienced. Looking at the map they figured that we get to the final town on the map however they could, walk a bit and then get to the next town. Not realizing the dangers in that open country. They were poor fools taking a risk and they judged the reward to be worth it. Similar people are seen in casinos today.

I gave up on Yellowstone after an episode or two but I like 1883 well enough. It would be refreshing if these people occasionally got a break from the so far unabated chain of misery, though.

Are you guys paying for Paramount+?
[/quote]

Yes. It’s cheaper to pay for the with ads version than to buy seasons of Magnum PI (reboot) and Evil and until recently All Rise

If you think casual sex is a modern invention I have some news for you.

It is ridiculous that she would act like she doesn’t understand prejudice against Indians exists.

Things certainly escalated quickly in the next episode. Won’t go into detail because of spoilers.

This was certainly one doomed wagon train. But we all suspected that when they left Ft Worth.

Only one episode to go.

I have a great grandmother that was Indian. My mom knew her. She was just a normal and kindly old lady. The family history about her has been lost. We don’t even know her full name or tribe.

Dang, is the writing staff getting payola from the owners of the Oregon Trail video game? Because that was some Unfortunate Immigrant Torture Porn right there. Also seems like a somewhat gruesome method of determining your homestead location.

I’m paying for it and no, there are not. I got it originally because my dad and I wanted to watch some star trek specials. But its really not a good service and I’m going to cancel it when my year is up.

However 1883 is great. I’m going to miss it. This show and the south park specials are the only good things about paramount+.

Is there a chance that 1883 will air on the Paramount network in a few months? Maybe in summer when the network will put it on to fill air time? I hope so. Thats the only way I’ll see it.

I got Paramount+ for 1883 and the CBS crime shows like NCIS, FBI etc. It’ll take my full one year subscription to catch up on those shows.

Unfortunately Yellowstone is on Peacock. I’ll probably sign up there. They also have Monk and the Law and Order shows.

I thought I saw it was on Paramount network last night. An earlier episode.

I looked up LaMonica Garrett. I didn’t realize that was him in the Arrow shows playing The Monitor. He looks like a completely different person with that beard.

The ending was well done.

It’s been announced that this was a limited series. There will be no season 2. Next will be 1932, another Dutton family story. You won’t have to know anything about 1883 or Yellowstone to watch it.

I saw the first two episodes of 1883 and I have to agree, it looked pretty good, however, I’m trying to figure out how to watch further episodes without having to pay ANOTHER fee on top of my already outrageous cable fees.

Our cable package has “paramount” however, further episodes of 1883 are not there but I’m wondering if that might change during summer rerun season.

A depression era storyline, not as good as a western I could get into that if done right.

I suspect there will be a prohibition/smuggling/gangster storyline.

Prohibition would have been repealed by 1932, so bootlegging maybe but not gangster stuff in Montana. I envision a struggle to save the homestead involving taxes, Native Americans, open grazing and park land.

Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

Paramount+ is having a $1/Mo. for the first 3 months offer, so my cheap-ass sprang for it. Watching ep.3 now.

Looking back on it after a few weeks a couple thoughts come to me. I’m glad this was a limited series. The self contained story of the journey was more interesting than them establishing the ranch. If they feel the need to have more historical context in Yellowstone they can always have more flashbacks.

If the ending were different I would have felt cheated. Yellowstone tends to show that if you are tough enough you can overcome any injury by force of will. I also thought they were going to have Graham Greene be the wise old Indian with the natural miracle cure. He wasn’t. It progressed the way it should have.

Tim McGraw’s acting remained excellent throughout. Faith Hill wasn’t given as much of the heavy lifting but she was very good as well.
