With an autistic sister-in-law in Japan, I’m well aware of how Japanese culture values conformity and doesn’t treat disabled individuals as well as we think they ought to - but I can’t recall anyone offering to euthanize her, or attempting to surreptitiously stab her to death in her sleep.
Given that he used to work there, it’s possible that his observations led him to believe that his victims were not living happy lives, and he was performing an act of mercy. He seems to think he’s done a good thing.
