1960's Mustang Engines? 'A', 'C', and 'K' Code?

Hello all.

I’m in the market at the moment for a perfectly restored '65 or '66 Mustang 2+2 Fastback. I’m not really interested in the '67 or later models. They started losing their innate charm for mine as they got bigger and heavier.

I understand that the 289 V8 of the era came in 3 sorts of engine output - ‘C’ code was 200hp, the ‘A’ code was 225hp, and the highly sought after ‘K’ code (which was usually found in the GT) came with 275hp.

My research thus far indicates that firms like Edelbrock for example produce total one-stop shopping turnkey solutions for things like fully computerised Electronic Fuel Injection systems, and alloy heads, and performance cam shafts and all that sort of thing - which in reality means that if you rebuilt one of those 289’s you can nudge 400hp if you buy all the goodies.

I may, or may not do that depending on what I end up managing to buy - after all, a lot of these Mustangs have already undergone engine rebuilds as well as coach restorations.

But if we have any knowledgeable Mustang fans amongst us, would you be so kind please as to share with me (or all of us actually) everything you know about the 289, and what the differences were between the various “codes”?

Indeed, any advice on rebuilds regarding products like Edelbrock would be wonderfully welcome too.

In fact, any advice you’ve got on a Mustang 2+2 Fastback 65-66 is gonna be fabulously welcome as well.

Thanks in advance fellow horsepower fans!

Yep. 289 with a K is the motor to have.

289’s…They would rank in power:
