1968 Camaro RS As A daily driver?

This car was always my dream car…at the time they came out, I was a youngster. Anyway, I’ve always loved the look of this car…suppose i found a well-restored example of the type-would it be feasible as a saily use car? of course, being so old, this car lacks:
-fuel injection (hard to start on cold days)
-airbags-could be dangerous
-“crush zones”-being in an accident could be fatal!
Anyway, anybody have real world experience? Would this car be a good car to drive around? How hard is it to maintain such a car-is getting spare parts a big problem?
Damn-I wish Chevy would make a MODERN version of this car!:frowning:

Didn’t they just discontinue the Camaro?

I see late '60s iron on the road often, and I’d imagine a Chevy would be one of the easier cars to find parts for. If you’re not too concerned with the purist approach, you could modernize it somewhat.

Shouldn’t be a problem, even if left totally stock. Airbags are overrated, a properly tuned carburetor works just fine, and crumple zones are for wusses :p.

Spare parts won’t be a problem. The early Camaros have more aftermarket parts suppliers than any other car (except possible the '55-'57 Chevy), and you can still get engine parts from GM – they made the small-block V8 up until very recently with only minor changes.

I drove a fresh-from-the-barn 1971 Nova (which is mechanically essentially the same as the '68 Camaro) every day for two years with no problems. I still drive it in the cooler months, but had to get a newer vehicle for the summer as soon as I could afford it (the Nova, a base model with no options, doesn’t have air conditioning).

You should be able to find an after market fuel injection conversion kit if you don’t like messing around with a carb.

Is that a 327? Properly tuned you could even get good gas mileage. I bet you will be disappointed in the brakes. Even todays cheapest cars have better brakes than sporty cars back then. Brake upgrades are readily available though.

Any car is a daily driver. Today it’s snowing, and I’m driving my 81 Vette.
[screams in the Corvette fan club]
It’s fun.
The only problems you gonna have are:

  • Loooooooot of TLC (milage…)
  • Getting late at work (or not at all) because of this @#$% car! (but is that a * problem*?)

Life is short : get over your questions and reluctance and HAVE FUN, full throttle!

And yes they discontinued the Camaro… Didn’t like much the latest version anyway…

French Frog is right. Any car can be a daily driver, and TLC is the answer. Go for it.

DaToad, daily driving a '62 Studebaker GT Hawk.

My daily driver is a 68 Mustang, like TurboD says the brakes are lame but I have plans. No car payments, people smile and give me the “thumbs-up” when they see it. Go for it!
