Link. I don’t know that their message got across, but the PSA was memorable for “Money for Nuthin’” type animation. Well, almost as good as “Money for Nuthin’” animation.
Strangely this morning for no reason whatsoever I found myself remembering the early '80s anti-smoking PSA’s with Brooke Shields. She would just talk to the camera and talk about “how totally gross” smoking is; and how smokers were losers. I think those spots did more to kill her career than anything else she did. She just came across as a bitchy prima donna, and I almost wanted to smoke a cigarette just to spite her.
Reminds me a bit of the Mark Twain Claymation that freaked out so many 80s kids.
I think that if you distilled the 1980s down to a single, grainy, minute long video, that is what you would get.
Does anyone remember the one with Yul Brynner that came out after he died? IIRC he says something like “Now that I’m gone, I tell you this: do not smoke!”
I don’t remember that PSA but I was a smoker in the 80s so if I saw it, I ignored it. It is freaky!
Did your dad ignore this one in the 60’s?
Everybody back then remembered Johnny Smoke
Anybody remember Nick, a teen?
I’m 43, and that’s creeping me out right now. Jesus. It looks like something made for an animated film festival - not necessarily targeted toward kids.
The two I most remember from the '70s are the Three Little Pigs ad and the “They Mind Very Much If You Smoke” ad with the dolphin. (Watching that again for the first time in 800 years makes me wonder if that’s William Daniels doing the voiceover on the latter- sounds like him.)
