1980's music.

WARNING: This is a very long post for a topic that doesn’t go anywhere.
In my humble opinion…
1980’S MUSIC RULES!!!(mostly talking pop and rock)
Oh sure, I’m not compleatly stuck in the 80’s. I think that Foo Fighters, Garbage, and STP are some of the best bands I’ve listened to, but over all the 1980’s had lots more good music and for me, good memories, which I can re-live everytime I listen to 80’s music.
One thing that made me kind of sad. A lot of the older music artists quickly dissapeared in the 90’s instead of slowy fading away. Most are still around, but, alas, it’s sad to say, their hit making days are over. No more hits from Rod Stewart, Deep purple, Journey, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett…(I know most of them started in the 60’s or 70’s, but they were still big in the 80’s).
I’m glad that the Gogo’s are getting back togeather, they’re my favorite female group besides the Supreams. I hope they have a hit single or two, but, sigh, probably not.
I don’t think musicians/groups who survived into the 90’s and 2000’s should compleatly stick with the 80’s though. If any of you watch VH-1 then you’ve probably watched, or heard about Rock Show, a show which mostly features 80’s hard rock/heave metal videos. Last week, it was being hosted by Rob Howford(hope I spelled that right) formerly of Judas Priest. Anyway, he was hosting it from a tour that he, Queensryche, and Iorn Maden are doing. They showed a new Iron Maden video (Bruce Dickenson has re-joined), anyway, the song was ok, but I couldn’t get over how 80’s the video seemed. In my opinion anyway. Sticking with 80’s style music is one thing, but at least update the video concepts.
Anyway, if you’ve read this to the end, you either have way to much time on your hands, or you’re insane  . Either way, thanks for reading.

I love the songs of the 80’s. With the exception of Collective Soul there are no current bands that I will buy the cds of. One thing I noticed is there is no more “bubble gum” type songs anymore. By bubble gum I mean silly little top 40 ditties that are fun to listen to and don’t have a serious message at all. Like “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats. That was a fun song to listen to. Listening to top 40 songs today make me think of suicide!

Of course, the heavy metal of the '80s was excellent also!

Heavy Metal, the black and the silver.

I spent much of the 80’s playing either air guitar or real guitar. I really liked the guitar’s prominent position in the mix back then. Most of the ‘pop’ I hear isn’t the same. Very few guitars. Pity.

When I hear music that those 80’s rock/metal bands are making now, it sounds fairly crappy. Take the last Blue Oyster Cult album, it was very poor.

I always thought the “Safety Dance” was a serious song!

Yeah! 80’s PUNK rules!!! Woohooo!!!

OMG…take all of the 80’s music and dump it into the most caustic solution on earth. Enough of it, it’s dead…retro isn’t cool anymore guys.

Bah! Down with the 80’s. They produced nothing but bad music and bad fashion.

IMO.

Are you kidding GaWd? 80’s new wave is the best ever! Ok, maybe I’m just nostalgic, but I truly do love 80’s music. The Talking Heads, Romeo Void, Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, The Cure, Culture Club, The Thompson Twins, New Order, David Bowie (who doesn’t love “China Girl?”), Billy Idol, The Police, The B52’s, The Cars, Modern English, Soft Cell (ok, don’t tell me you don’t dig “Tainted Love”), Stray Cats, Tina Turner, Eurithmics (sp?), Stevie Wonder, oh my GaWd - there are so many.
Excuse me while I slip Dexys Midnight Runners into the CD player . . .

I know, I’m sorry…excuse me while I gag…

Just IMO…

GaWd, the phrase was “gag myself with a spoon”.

The Police, Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Adam with and without the Ants, the Go-Go’s, Talking Heads, Blondie, Weird Al, Rush, Van Halen with David Lee Roth, INXS…Yeah, I have a lot of fond musical memories from the 80’s.

Talking Heads and Dead Kennedys. That’s about it for me and 80s music.

MR

From the OP:

“Heave metal” is about right. You know, like all those crappy bands Drain Bead likes. :stuck_out_tongue:

I do still love my 80s music. And my 70s music. And my 50s and 60s music. There’s lots of good 90s music, too, depending on what you consider “good,” I just find myself having to search a little harder for it.

You’re talking to someone who’s been posting at the 80’s Server On Board Forum for 2 or 3 years now.

What can I say. It was the decade where the music was upbeat, and my jeans were a 24 inch waist. sigh

I love the music of the 80s. REM, U2, Men at Work. Plus I loved women with the big hair moosed up look.

IMHO I think the 80’s was the single worst decade for music in the entire recorded history of life as we know it. And being 24 yo, I had to suffer through it for my entire grade school experience more or less.

Again, just MHO.

I just had my friend make me a CD with 80’s music: Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Flock Of Seagulls, Men At Work, Madness…I love it! I am listening to it right now, as a matter of fact.

Music from the 1980’s was great! It was (is!) just fun stuff that really didn’t have to have any message, just enough beat to dance to.

pkbites is right–what they refer to as “bubble gum” music today is NOTHING like bubble gum music from the 80’s.

Oh, there are lots of songs now that are fun to listen to, but have no meaning. But you’re right. In the 90’s angst ridden songs took over. Still, every now and then, there’s one that’s pretty good. In my opinion anyway.

I didn’t even know that Blue Oyster Cult was still togeather.

Hey, take that back. 80’s rock, new wave, and even thier pop music was better than it is today. I don’t like modern pop, but back then, pop bands like Wham made good music, even Paula Abdul pretty good. And we didn’t have crapy teeny bopers like Britny Spears, N’Sync, 38 Degrees, Christina Agulara, BackStreat Boys, and so on. Yeah, we had Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, but they weren’t so bad. Ok, so there were the New Kids On The Block…Yeeeaachhhhhh!!!
Anyway, with a few exceptions (like NKOTB), the 80’s made you feel good and produced good music. So there!

No Joel, your 80’s music blows, and hard! I am also a 24 yr. old(coinkydink?), and I can’t stand that modern rock garbage that was thrust upon the public.

Down with the 80’s, and up with my “Angst-ridden, no point-havin” music of the 90’s and 00’s.

The 1980s gave unto the world R.E.M., the Replacements, the Pixies and Husker Du. Wonderful stuff.
