2-hour parking 8am to 6PM. When do I have to get up in the morning to move the car?

If I park my car overnight at a location posted “2 hour parking 8am to 6pm”, can I get a parking ticket at 8:01am, because I’ve obviously been there more than 2 hours? Or am I safe until 10am?

This is, in part, a jurisdictional question, so…
YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY!

But, IMHO, if the sign says “2 hour parking 8am - 6pm”, then that means that the 2-hour limit is only in effect between those posted times. You may have parked your car there at 6:01 the previous evening, but you still shouldn’t get a ticket at 8:01 am, because during the restricted period, you haven’t violated the regulations. You should be safe until 10 am.

Unless, of course, the parking services attendant (the job formally known as “meter maid”) hasn’t been by to check your car or mark your tire. I wouldn’t chance it though.

10 am seems reasonable to me but that might not be the standard where you live. I’d call the local cops just to be sure.

I second that you should be able to leave your car there until 10:00 am. I used to live on a street like that and that is how it worked. This was in Boston where the meter maids were not exactly generous so I am sure that they would have nailed me if they could have. Likewise, it is ok to park for the night at 4:01 pm because the regulation won’t be in effect long enough for you to be ticketed in the evening.

I would imagine it would be 10AM as well.

Of course, one could easily call the local parking authority to find out the scoop. But I can’t see how they would know whether you pulled up at 8:01AM or 7PM the previous night, knowwhatImean?

I will add my voice to the list of people who thinks it best to just ask the people who give out the tickets. They will be glad to tell you the answer I would think. Despite what we think, the signs are there to help ease parking problems, not to create money for the city.

What happens if you parkd you car there at 5pm the night before, does that mean you only have until 9am?

  • That’s * what they’d like you to believe.

Check your local laws and regulations carefully.

You may be able to park in one specific location from 8:00am until 10:00am, and move your vehicle to another spot on the street. I remember living in one city where the city ordinance required you to move your vehicle to a completely different street!
