Well yea… assume this, what’s the place to go in California if you want to live in a weird city with so many one way streets you get dizzy just looking at the map?
San Francisco. Basically, if you want a cheap house, I hear the cardboard boxes behind safeway are pretty nice…
But seriously, move more inland. The closer to the water, the baseball stadium, and farther from the freeway, the more expensive. Live under the free way, you get cheap housing, plus the sounds of the ocean all day long!
Heh. You folks need to check out the poorest state in the union…
New Mexico.
When I lived there, my buddy had a two bedroom, two bath, 1200sqft, less than one year old, w&d included, w/parking, for $745 a month.
I moved to Colorado Springs, and I have a one br, one bath, 895sqft, no parking, for $775 a month. The nice new places want like $1200 a month for rent.
Life’s a bitch, and then… well, something happens.
Yeah, you guys need rent control. Look how well it worked for New York. All the buildings are clean, rents are low, and everyone’s happy.
<choke>
Hey, move up to Edmonton. We have a fairly new custom built 2050 sq ft home with 3 bedrooms, huge home office, huge family room, deck, games room with pool table, jacuzzi, two-car garage, etc. It’s worth about $105,000 US.
You can buy a NEW 2300 sq ft house here on a lake lot with three floors, jacuzzi in the en-suite bathroom, fireplace in the master bedroom, etc., for about $165,000 US. And for the first time in decades, our interest rates are lower than yours. And our taxes in Alberta are probably about what you’re paying in California.
What on earth made you come up with “wombat turd” as a phrase?!? I ask only because for years and years, I’ve referred to my toes as wombat turds, to avoid being tickled. (“Are those TOOOOOOES I see peeking out?” :::person coming forward with tickle fingers waving::: “No! They are wombat turds!”) and I’ve never heard anyone else use the phrase.
If a spoiled SFer was to move to Alberta, could he expect freezing temperatures occuring almost daily during several months of the year? All that cold Molsen in the winter just does not seem all that useful.
Tucson does have cheap housing. I rented a 1 bedroom cottage there for $250/month… and later a huge 2 bedroom duplex with 3 walk in closets (one large enough to be a dressing room) a huge dining room, a yard, W&D hookups, a driveway, 2 blocks from the U of A campus… for $375/month.
Now I live in northern VA, and for $1150 we rent a 2 story + basement 3 bedroom townhouse with a small yard. It’s really run down though and nothing works
Lately I’ve had tis weird fixation with large marsupials and rodents. If you look at some of my recent threads, you’ll notice my animals of choice, when mentioning animals, are capybaras and wombats. I’m not sure why. Also, I remember recently seeing a thread about how wombat turds are square shaped. I figured it would be more painfull to violate someone with a square than a circle. Anyway.
pugluvr the Morgan Hill-ite checking in. Yeah, I know Morgan Hill is not too close to SF, but here’s a price check: We paid $350G in November 1999 for our attached home, and it was just appraised at $420G. BTW, for the information of everyone not living in the bay area, one of the reasons housing is going sky-high here is the SHITLOAD of high-paying jobs in the area. If you have any pretense to technical skills, you could move here and get 50 job offers the first day. And the quality of life, despite high housing and crappy commutes, is awesome.
Wait a minute! I mean it sucks here! Don’t move to the bay area! It’s where all the fruits and nuts live! Aw shucks I blew it.
Wow, I won’t feel bad anymore writing the mortgage check.
$2,000 a month in RENT???
We pay $850 a month for a four-bedroom, den, 2 and a half bath 1950’s rancher, full finished basement on a half-acre, backing to woods, 1 and a half car garage and a big shed. :::ducks and runs:::
HOLY CRAP!!! No wonder you are always so bitter, oldscratch.
I live in a luxary 3 bedroom 1800 sq ft apartment. The complex is brand new, I am the first tenant in APT 1228. I only pay 1380 a month. That is a lot around here!!
Oooops, we are supposed to be bitching, not bragging right? OK, well… the fucking pool was closed on Saturday because the pump broke and I had all my friends coming over because of my birthday. FUCKERS!! I was so pissed!!! Um, it’s fixed now. I could bitch about the aligators that live in the ponds here… but I kinda like them.
