This is conservative propaganda about their imaginary Leftist Agenda rather than a description of actual legislative goals of liberals or leftists.
What liberals and leftists are actually working to achieve, as Red_Wiggler notes, are initiatives to benefit Americans in general, such as better support for healthcare, infrastructure, jobs, and human rights, including the rights of LGBTQ people. Because these initiatives are broadly popular with Americans and conservatives have no actual constructive governing agenda to compete with them, conservatives fall back on pretending that what the “Leftist Agenda” is really about is a bunch of fringe stuff like using non-traditional pronouns and not making people learn multiplication tables anymore.
It’s all a bunch of paranoid bullshit, but it works on conservatives.
Gaslighting doesn’t work on me. Removal of standards or the enacting of double standards is real. Not arresting or prosecuting a vast amount of criminal conduct in the name of equity is real. Even the left is getting fed up with the far left when they actually become victim to the consequences of far leftist policy.
No, it’s basically just conservative rumormongering for their base. If you look at actual reports of, say, arrests and prosecutions at right-wing versus left-wing protests, it’s not the left-wingers or minorities who are getting coddled by law enforcement.
Yeah, double standards in law enforcement certainly exist, but they favor conservatives and white people. Conservatives don’t like to hear that, so they call it “gaslighting”.
Not really. Despite octopus’s best efforts, the made-up propagandistic nature of his rhetoric is transparent enough to seriously undermine its credibility.
It’s pretty funny when expressed like that. But, it should be worrying that even the mayor in a so-called ‘progressive’ city like San Francisco can no longer afford to pander to the far left.
“Leftists disagree with each other and change their policies if they turn out not to work! This shows how untrustworthy leftists are, compared to rightists who refuse to disagree with each other or to change their policies no matter how destructive and unworkable they are!”
A word of caution about excess lunacy is not a script. If you think this only exists in my head you haven’t been paying attention to a growing schism between the classical liberal faction and the radical far left. A schism that is growing in large part due to increasing public sentiment against the easily predictable consequences of moving towards so-called ‘progressive’ ideology with regards to academics and crime. You think the shift in voting that occurred with the elections of this year are anomalous?
I don’t think anybody’s denying that the conservative propaganda you’re spouting here is being generated by conservative propaganda machines significantly larger than your own head. And yes, that conservative propaganda is successfully scaring many conservatives about the “Leftist Agenda” of the “Communist” “liberals”.
The point is that this propaganda isn’t at all an accurate reflection of what liberals and leftists are actually focusing on. Conservatives are whipping up conservative hysteria about exaggerated versions of comparatively fringe leftist ideas in order to distract their base from the fact that the real governing agenda of Democrats/liberals is in fact quite popular.
For a double dose of deception, conservative politicians then try to persuade their base that they should get the credit for the popular Democratic/liberal legislation that they themselves refused to support.
What you’d be talking about is a conspiracy of some minority of democrats perpetrated against the majority. Because the policies that you describe as “far left” are never mentioned on left leaning media. I’ve never heard Bernie Sanders or AOC reference them.
Versus being able to turn over to Fox news any evening and hear batshit lunacy. Or see essentially all GOP reps and senators that aren’t Romney or Cheney talking shit about the election.
So even if you’re right (and spoiler: you aren’t, you’re just repeating right wing propaganda), it’s largely irrelevant to the OP, which is about libs and conservatives in general.
Already posted one. The Mayor of San Francisco’s twitter feed. You can see a sampling of the schism there. Furthermore, read through a few months of NY Time’s editorials. You can see the dem’s dirty laundry being aired quite publicly.
I don’t follow your inaccurate conclusion. Even superficially it doesn’t make sense.
The mayor of San Francisco is left wing. She is saying that the current reality on the street which is a direct consequence of the soft on crime stance of the left is no longer tolerable, not due to any philosophical epiphany or reasoning, but because the impacts to the city are no longer something that can be ignored. The comments that respond to her show the schism. Of course, it is just one itty-bitty anecdote from a huge country but the trend is becoming more clear when taken into context with 100s of articles in left leaning media, the recent elections, and the current polls.
The sensible left is trying to distance themselves from the radical ‘progressives.’ You can even see a tiny bit of that here in the Politics and Election forum where there are intra-party disagreements.
In the context of a thread where the question is are liberals stupid and are conservatives evil or whatever I suppose it was inevitable an example of something that made liberals either stupid or evil appearing would be nit-picked but I’m not sure the point of the nit-picking. It’s a bit like denying inflation exists when one can go to the store and see the results of inflation, assuming the store is staffed and has supplies… Who’s being fooled?
She isn’t in any way attributing the current reality on the street to any so-called “soft on crime stance of the left”: that’s just your right-wing propaganda rationalization.
And I notice that you failed to remark on the mayor’s simultaneous reaffirmation of commitment to “left-wing” social-welfare policies for urban residents:
So your attempt to cast this as indicative of any kind of “trend” of liberals in general “walking away” from disastrous “leftist” policies in some sort of major ideological “schism” is, as usual, just a bunch of conservative propaganda intended to distract from the glaring failures of conservative “governance”.
In a day where we heard that members of “fair and balanced” state media had direct channels to government, and were begging Trump to call off the mob attacking the capitol – all of which is coming out of an investigation that Republicans tried to block from happening – the real threat here is the “far left”.
A far left that…we never actually hear about because no-one advocates for the policies that octopus alludes to. But apparently it’s the cause of America’s ills.
And it’s got so bad, that Democrats are allowed to freely exchange ideas and openly advocate for reasonable policies. Proof, if proof be needed of how crazy they are.
@octopus In case the sarcasm isn’t clear, the cite you’re looking for is the Democrat who advocated for being soft on crime. Or better yet, any of the things you listed previously. Remember this is a thread about Liberals in general; it should be trivial to find a cite of the typical position.
How in the world do you have a city or a state where the police aren’t arresting criminals because the political apparatus which includes DAs isn’t a reflection of the politicians in charge being soft on crime? How the politicians behave with their encouragement of lawless is relevant to being labeled soft on crime which is stupid and evil if you ask me.
You honestly forget all the defund the police, end bail, talk of prison abolition, all cops are bastard rhetoric and action that has occurred and is occurring? You unaware of the softening on crime that has led to all the mass looting in California? De facto decriminalization of theft under what is it $950 seems soft on crime to me.
